Santorum has Iowa, Gingrich has Palin – and suddenly South Carolina is wide open
The London Telegraph ^ | January 19, 2012 | Dr. Tim Stanley

What a difference 24 hours makes to a Republican race. I arrived in Washington late last night, passed out, woke up, ran to a GOP breakfast, and only discovered over a midmorning sherry what happened all the time that I had been in the air or fast asleep. A tubby gentleman – head of an organisation titled something like Southerners Against Decadence – told me, “Perry is out, Santorum won Iowa and Gingrich is backed by Palin”. This news cycle is bound to shake the race up a little, depending on who benefits from it. Here are the highlights and how they might play out.

1. Rick Perry is out. We might ask why the Texan didn’t stay in until Saturday and wait to see how he’d do in South Carolina. He certainly has plenty of money and name recognition. But maybe his local polls confirmed what we’ve known for a long time – he’s sinking fast in the Palmetto State and is on course to place fifth. Quitting now spares him embarrassment and gives him one last bit of leverage: his endorsement. The word is that he’s leading towards Gingrich, so that’s Perry out and Gingrigh up.

2. Rick Santorum won Iowa after all, perhaps by 34 votes. The Iowa GOP is calling it a draw. Why is that when Mitt was ahead by just 8 votes it was a Romney victory, but now Santorum is ahead by 34, it’s a draw? Whatever: this retrospective win (and it is a win, Iowa) gives Santorum a big claim to be the only man to actually beat Romney. It also means that we have to revise the history books. I’m not alone for having written that Mitt was unique in Republican history for winning Iowa and New Hampshire in a row....

I’m gravitating to Newt, but you have to give Santorum credit for beating Milt in Iowa by spending $22,000 versus many millions.

I have an ex-wife too.

What I expect to hear form Gingrich if she is a lying would be:

"Without going into detail not everything she said is true, but most of it is, I am guilty, I have repented, and I have changed."

Add to your legislative proposals the elimination of several federal gun laws - the 1934 NFA, the 1968 GCA, the Brady Law, the Lautenberg Amendment and Title 18, Section 922(o), as well as passing a national reciprocity law for concealed carry - and you’ll have a near perfect agenda. Defunding most of the EPA, most of Homeland Security and all of the BATFE would be cream on the cake.

I think John Kasich would be a great choise for the VP slot. The Governor of an important swing state, Ohio, and someone that worked on balancing the budget with Newt in Congress.

I watched that trailer, too. That ABC program won’t show in central time until 10:35, 11:35 eastern time, and it’s a thirty minute show. I think people will be watching the debate at that time and not watching ABC.

My ideal ticket (as of today) would be Romney Paul

I don't see how a Freeper of your vintage can possibly choose such a horrible combination for Prez and VP.

Did you simply forget your sarc tag?

This would also lay the groundwork for a conservative succesor to 8 years of Newt. We could have 16 years of conservative leadership to undo all the damage the O did in the last 4 years.

I like the idea of Allen West as VP. He’s a potent voice but also doesn’t suck the air out of the room when he speaks. Could make a very powerful team.

People in this country have had enough experience with divorce that I expect they know what to expect from an ex-wife. Newt should simply say “Well, she is my ex-wife. What do you expect?” and leave it at that; or maybe add “I forgive her”

I don't believe the $22,000 part but it is a fact that Santorum accomplished a great deal on very little money.

This was given as a reason why Iowa will retain its first-in-nation status as Iowa gives even those with little money the chance to prove the viability as a candidate.

How do you make the assumption that “most” of what the woman says is true? Has that been your experience in life?

Dude we're on the same side here. It has been open admitted knowledge that Newt cheated on her for years before divorcing her.

Newt has said he repented and changed and needs to meet this honestly and head on for those of us that are holding our nose to support him, to stay with him.

BTW...2nd Marine Division ? I was 1st, Desert Storm.

Thank you for your service. No, a lot of people think that. 2nd United States Infantry Division. My father was a career Marine (commo chief) so I decided to join a different service and see some new scenery. BTW, the 2ID was commanded by several Marine officers during WWI (during which they had a Marine brigade aboard), the only Army division with that distinction. Google it.

I predict Rick Santorum will drop out soon. He graduated from law school, so I assume he can read a poll, right?

Why would Santorum drop out? He was ahead of Newt in the first two contests.

While I like Santorum more than Newt, I still like Newt, but I fear the lib media will “Cain” him. If they destoryed Herman Cain WITHOUT evidence, what are they going to do with Newt?

Personally I think Newt has changed, and (unlike some people) would not be supporting him at all, if I didn’t think he is a moral person now.

Actually Santorum won Iowa by double the '34' votes. They aren't counting the 'missing' 8 precincts, but in the initial results there (good enough to anoint Mitt's 'win') Rick had an additional 35 vote margin so he won 69.

Meanwhile Obama has specialized in taking out opponents via their old divorce records and by preaching class warfare. To run against Santorum he'd have to learn new tricks.
