GREENVILLE, S.C. On the eve of the South Carolina primary, Iowa Republicans dealt Mitt Romneys campaign a blow by formally declaring Rick Santorum the winner of their Jan. 3 caucuses.
At 18 minutes before midnight Friday, South Carolina time, the Republican Party of Iowa released a statement revising its Thursday announcement that reported Santorum ahead of Romney but also saying the two-week-old race had no clear winner.
In order to clarify conflicting reports and to affirm the results released January 18 by the Republican Party of Iowa, Chairman Matthew Strawn and the State Central Committee declared Senator Rick Santorum the winner of the 2012 Iowa Caucus, the state GOPs statement read.
The news that Romney who for two weeks celebrated what he jokingly called a landslide eight-vote victory in Iowa, only to see it reversed this week when the state GOP certified Santorum the leader by 34 votes officially lost the first contest muddies his narrative, especially as Newt Gingrich surges in the polls in South Carolina...

Wow, that was fast!
He is still a LOSER. Get out now Rick. It’s over. Listen, .... the fat lady is singing.
It’s over, it’s over, it’s over
All the rainbows in the sky
Start to weep then say goodbye
You won’t be seeing rainbows anymore
Setting suns before they fall
Echo to you “That’s all, that’s all”
But you’ll see lonely sunsets after all
It’s over, it’s over, it’s over
He is still a LOSER.
***Romney is the loser. He’s the one you should be singing to. But you’re too wrapped up in your own petty politics to see what’s good for conservatism.
A meaningless outcome - to MOST people. But NOT to Mittens. It means a LOT to him. How do I know? Because when asked by John King what he might do differently in his campaign so far, he said “I would have worked harder for those 25 votes in Iowa”. So I will revel in the fact that Mittens is stewing over this overturned result.
now that the two playtime states are done the real deal starts in 5 hours.. the winner there will be flooded with endorsements, numerous new campaign staffs all over the country and lots of cash
Dang, that’s cold. LOL
Yah, but at 8 votes, ABC said he won Iowa!
Mitt won Iowa!
A few dozen votes the other way when reality bitch-slaps, then it’s:
Virtually a tie!
Newt was right spot on the money when he said the press is in the tank for the Kenyan.
Pretty impressive, considering South Carolina hasn’t even begun tallying their votes yet.
Breaking news? Really?
Congrats to RICK!
Btw, the latest internals the day before the all-important SC primary..
Newt Gingrich 39% ..GAME!
Mitt Romney 26%
Newt Gingrich 34% ..SET!!
Mitt Romney 29%
Newt Gingrich 44% ..MATCH!!!
Mitt Romney 20%
Yes, since it wasn’t decided until about an hour ago. Click on the link and read it. Jeez!
What a disaster the Iowa Republican Party is. Santorum worked hard and set himself up to benefit from the Romney carpetbombing against Newt. That is ancient history now. Seems like Iowa was months ago.
Ah, poor Mit-Wit. He’s so sad. ;-)
ya have to wonder what the deal was with those 8 precincts that never had the votes counted. Iowa kind of dropped the ball. Congrats to the Santorum people either way though.
The yarn of Mittens is coming unraveled. Only kittens like Mittens.
Most likely the orders were:
Mitt wins bring them in. Mitt looses, TRASH em.
Probably used to stoke the fire.
With a Rebel Yell....
Yeah Rick, get out now so that we can choose between the Global Warming whackjob / Acorn endorsing / Big Government RINO and the other RINO from Boston.
What 8 precincts?
Are you talking about Virginia?
Huh?! When Mr. Romney was ahead by eight votes, he was the "clear winner". Now, Mr. Santorum is ahead by over 30, and there's "no clear winner"?! I swear, I'll never understand this "progressive/liberal" math.
Karl Rove is deeply sadden!
The Republican Party of Iowa right acting irrationally as usual!
The sad part about all this is Santorum never got his just reward—Instead Mitt and the media coasted right into N.H.
121,501 showed up at the cauci.
There were 1774 precincts.
Mitt got about 24.5% of the precincts reported, so did Rick.
Rick got 34 more votes than did Mitt.
The average precinct had 68 votes cast. (121,501 divided by 1774)
If eight precincts were missing that would be (averaged out) 544 votes.
If Mitt got 28% of those that would be 152.
If Rick got 22% of those that would be 119.
I know that this is all about figures lie and liars figure, but that would leave Rick ahead by 1 vote,
Did your's count????
Congrats, Rick! Congrats also on getting the $1 million in donations within 72 hours.
May newt and Rick somehow Both come in ahead of Romney somehow tomorrow!
You may want to check the delegate counts. Rick is very much in the running. It ain't over yet.
I’m a Newt supporter and have my own issues w/ Rick S. regarding his record and stances. However, this is another glaring example of the blue blood, RNC manipulation of the conservative electorate with pay to play politics. How many weeks did we have to endure Rove and the Republican elite in trying to anoint Mitt just as the DNC did w/ Obama. “There hasn’t been a candidate to win the first two states” blah blah blah.
As If we didn’t need another example of there being strangers in OUR HOUSE.
This is a multiple front battle
You may hate conservatives, but they will still fight. Why don’t you move to DU?
Conservatives: 1 (Santorum)
Socialists: 1 (Romney 1, Gingrich 0)
Big government Newt has ALL the media attention, and still is losing to Santorum.)
Of course, the only reason Gingrich is in the primary is so he can make a global warming movie and win the Nobel Prize. Why doesn't he just leave and go one his climate change jihad now.
Your response is quite ironic given all the criticism of Santorum on this board that says he acts like a “petulant teen.”
You definitely wanna check out the thread right below this one.
I beleive if I were running I would rather be in Newt's boat right now.
“real deal starts in 5 hours”.
Ah, I don’t think so.
ANOTHER open primary state where the D’s get to vote for the R most likely to fail.
Also being penalized for moving their date, after all, their open primary is just SO damn important. (NOT!)
Not sure if Florida is any less ridiculous, they ALSO jumped the gate, I can only hope so.
Nevada Feb. 4th., a real primary caucus, but probably in the bag for Rotney as he will have the mormon vote sewn up.
Just like Dingy Reid, as both of them do not separate politics and religion when it’s to their advantage.
sorry but you fail.. since 1980 EVERY winner of the SC primary went on to win the nomination..
Hey Rick, that and $1.50 will get you across the Bay Bridge. Oh wait.. it’s more now?
And yes; the RNC/GOP Ordained, candidate; not knocking any socks off. . .not now; OR later, folks.
If he wins; we are in bigger trouble; not less.
Willie Mitty doesnt do losing very well...
It would be unkind to caption that photo with what it brings to mind, so I won’t.
Yep.. Santorum has the only win in a truly contested state (Face it.. NH was Mitt`s all the way), and HE`S the one who should leave??
So all this blah blah “since 1980 EVERY winner of the SC primary went on to win the nomination” doesn’t mean much because they moved the date up?
I’ve never understood the logic of those who believe that they can win the support of others, by attacking the candidate the others support. Gingrich has been saying very nice things about Santorum, while making it clear he doesn’t believe that Santorum has the organization or resources to compete against Romney in the long haul. Those of you who want Santorum supporters to turn to Gingrich when, likely, Santorum drops out, should try to be a bit more gracious. The honey vs. vinegar analogy still applies to most things in life.
Yes, Maggie, BREAKING NEWS!!
