MOSCOW, January 21, 2012 (WAFA) – Russian Patriarch Kirill Saturday awarded President Mahmoud Abbas the Orthodox People’s Unity Foundation prize, also known as Patriarch Alexis II prize.

Abbas thanked Kirill for the prize, which he said is a proof of the close ties between Palestine and the people of Russia.

“For me, this prize is a motivation to continue on the path to spread the culture of peace and dialogue between religions and civilizations instead of the culture of hate and violence, and to support tolerance and accept the other instead of bigotry and denial of the other,” he said.

Abbas said that efforts to bring peace to the Middle East and to build the independent Palestinian state alongside Israel are continuing, but “these efforts are still facing Israeli government obstinacy.”

Kirill, on his part, praised Abbas for “safeguarding religious peace,” for upholding Russian-Palestinian friendship and for facilitating Russian pilgrimage to the Holy Land, saying he looks forward for the time the Palestinians will have their own independent state, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Abbas decided to donate the money from the prize to support Palestinian students studying in Russian universities.

Valery Alekseev, who heads the International Fund for the Unity of the Orthodox Peoples, had this to say in his interview with a Voice of Russia correspondent.

"Mahmoud Abbas was picked from among other candidates for the award for being the guardian of Christian values in the Middle East. Mr.Abbas devotes a lot of his time to promoting the Christian-Islamic dialogue and encouraging Orthodox pilgrimages and the Orthodox presence on the Holy Land. In addition, he has been making a hefty personal contribution to a Palestinian settlement which is crucial for the stability in the Middle East and elsewhere." - January 21, 2012

Better translation: "You and your bloodthirsty savage associates would sooner slit my throat than give me the time of day, but perhaps by giving you this award you might spare us from your murderous violence for a little while longer."

Stupid man. And if the Pope did this, HE would be stupid too. As would any Evangelical or other Christian Leader. Even a superficial reading of Scripture shows that Jesus, Mary, Joseph, The Apostles, St Paul, St. Peter, and the entire first generation of Christians (Except maybe Luke, a Greek!) were JEWS. To award a prize to Abbas is like singing a hymn to the antichrist.

(And I LOVE the Russian Orthodox Liturgy, the Music, The Art, and all that goes with it, so this is NOT an indictment of my Orthodox brethren. (I am particularly fond of Rachmaninoff’s “Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom”, even though I am a Charismatic Evangelical Non-Denominational Believer! :-))
