Police have charged a Landstown High School math teacher with abduction and sexual abuse after a student reported being hit several times with a belt after school.
Police in a news release said the female student stayed after school Wednesday for a tutoring session and had failed to complete an assignment. She accused the teacher of hitting her across the buttocks as punishment.
The girl reported that to a school nurse, and the nurse called police and Child Protective Services.
Police charged Michael David Shanklin Jr., 37, of the 2500 block of Hunters Run Trail. He was jailed without bond.
Shanklin has been placed on leave without pay pending the outcome of the court case, said Kathleen O'Hara, a schools spokeswoman. Shanklin has taught at Landstown High since August 2006.
A bond hearing is scheduled for today.
Any teacher, male or female, who would stay after school with a kid is a fool. This guy may be guilty. Then again he may have a pissed off student. It happens.
When I was in high school, this is how they dealt with habitually skipping out of class.

I am not making any judgement in this case, but when I was
in school, 50s-60s, I got my share of licks, even if I did not deserve them.
I do not remember any girls receiving corporal punishment, but
girls were not like they are today.
What is the basis for the abduction charge and why call it sexual assault? Sounds like someone is out to get the teacher.

A lot of teachers aren’t even qualified to teach their own subject. Why should they be given the authority to hit your kids? Do you allow your dentist to hit your kids? How about the meter reader? How about the cashier at the supermarket?
Hopefully, he didn’t plan to multiply.
Look, if the report is true, this was a weirdo who ordered her to pull down her pants. This shouldn’t even be considered in the same category as paddling and such, whether yesteryear or today. It would have been sexual abuse, and as police go nosing into the case, it would not be highly surprising for more of it to turn up, maybe kiddie porn on his computer, etc.
Trust me when I say, “He said, She said”.
Kids know how the game is played and how to get back at the teacher. Wait until the ENTIRE story comes out before passing judgement.

Exactly. When I was a teacher, I made it a point to never be alone with a student, and I am a woman, just because of the possibility of false allegations.
In many of these cases, if the student is of high school age, I find myself, sadly, being suspicious of false witness.

Okay, you’re dumb. Seriously, think about this. You stated this was how teachers used to deal with rowdy students. Did teachers use to have affairs with them as well? Didn’t teachers use to be folks of higher moral behaviors than the public school hires we have now? How I see this is a 30 something year old male teacher got “off” by “spanking” a teenage girl. A girl staying after school to complete a homework assignment. If she had been my daughter, Mr. Educator would have had a pencil shoved through his eye the moment he pulled out a belt.
It’s possible in principle. Maybe she had a friend do it to her so she could go show the nurse. However who’d want to undergo that for that purpose, unless maybe a masochist?
