Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told sailors aboard the country's oldest aircraft carrier that the U.S. is committed to maintaining a fleet of 11 of the formidable warships despite budget pressures, in part to project sea power against Iran.

Panetta also told the crowd of 1,700 gathered in the hangar bay of the USS Enterprise that the ship is heading to the Persian Gulf region and will steam through the Strait of Hormuz in a direct message to Tehran.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

Panetta, “We’re gutting the military but keeping an illusion of strength. Just wait until the number of training accidents rise like a rocket like they did under Carter and Clinton!”

Panetta is ready to maintain funding in the area of DoD which has not been called upon to do major fighting since about 1944 or 45.

I love the US Navy and I recognize the important role the Navy has filled since the end of WWII -- but as far as serious naval battles go, with the possibility of losing one of our capital ships, you really have to go back about 7 decades.

The Obama Administration will gut the Army, gut the Marines, gut the Air Force, heck they'll probably gut the Coast Guard too. But the Navy? Obama will send much military funding there -- it's where it will likely do the least amount of good.

Show? Didn't help the poor guys on the USS Cole.
How 'bout we use some of this "sea power" once in a while.

Be reminded that the only service specifically referenced in the Constitution is the Navy. Just saying because not so much as the Constitution limits Zero from crapping all over it but it gives cover that he guts all the others while most likely using the document to justify his goal to cut them all, or just as much as he can get.

When the others are no longer viable, he will gut the Navy as well because there will no longer be a list of other services capable of defending it.

Big mistake not to replace the Big E...she’s been part of US Naval history form the beginning...the next Carrier built should have her name!

Maybe Secretary of War West will ask President Newt for a 12th Carrier to be named Enterprise.

Obama and Panetta can't do jack squat...Military funding and budgets are controlled by Congress. POTUS and SECDEF may state their preferences, but congress ultimately makes the decisions about how money is appropriated.

At least that's how it's supposed to work.

We were in the area together. I was aboard the USS Enterprise CVAN65 with Fighter Squadron VF96.
