WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has criticized rival Newt Gingrich for earning more than $1.6 million in consulting fees from Freddie Mac even though he has as much as $500,000 invested in the U.S.-backed lender and its sister entity, Fannie Mae.

A day before Romney planned to release his income tax returns, his old investments in two controversial government-backed housing lenders stirred up new questions at the same time his campaign targeted Gingrich for his work for Freddie Mac.

The dimensions and the sources of Romney's wealth, which he has estimated to be as much as $250 million, have become pivotal issues in the roiling GOP primary campaign. For months, Romney dismissed calls to release his personal income tax records. But after mounting criticism from his rivals and others, coupled with his stinging weekend loss to Gingrich in the South Carolina primary, Romney agreed to release his 2010 return and 2011 estimate.

Romney is a liar. Gingrich's consulting firm may have had revenues of $1.6 Mn. That does not mean that Gingrich personally, was paid $1.6 Mn.

Exactly right and Newt was trying to make this argument when Mitt and the moderator cut him off. He was asking what Bain’s revenues were, so he could show that the company revenue is different than Mitt’s salary. I’m sure he’ll do this another time and make Mitt look like a fool.

I loved Newts comment when he said “Gov. Romney had done consulting work for many years, but I’ve never heard anyone yet say it was “lobbying”.

I was a college debater and even made it to national competition, but Newt would have whipped my butt!

I have been considering a thread that articulates what conservative answers can be specifically. I am thinking about what to do realistically to solve the welfare issue, the urban, “I don’t work” issue, the education skills issue, and the manufacturing retooling. I am talking specifics. Perhaps by state?

We have a lot of leeches in this country who are feeding off the productive. It’s like watching hyenas going after prey on a “Wild Kingdom” episode. Or like “shark week.”

It comes to mind that those who read FR might be able to send the summarized thread results to other conservatives.

Mitt Romney’s communist connection Bain Capital

Most Americans probably are not intimately familiar with Huawei (pronounced “Wa-way,” as if Gilda Radner of Saturday Night Livefame were asked to pronounce the name). The company’s founder, Ren Zhengfei is a former officer of the People’s Liberation Army.

Tough to know what to make of that. When it comes to speaking with the press, Ren is a regular Greta Garbo. A mini-profile Forbes ran three years ago noted that many of Huawei’s major customers are state-run businesses in China. And while Ren owns 1 percent of the company, the rest belongs to an unidentified “union.”

Go figure.
Meanwhile, Ren has gone about building Huawei into a success story disregarding the usual corporate niceties. In 2000–the CIA accused Huaweiof secretly selling a communications system to Iraq. In the final report of the Iraq Survey Group, Huawei and two other Chinese companies were singled out for carrying out “extensive work in and around Baghdad”–mainly telecommunication switches and the installation of fiber-optic cable.

Then in 2003, Cisco socked Huawei with a patent infringement lawsuit. Cisco claimed Huawei ripped off its intellectual property to make a lineup of routers and switches. Huawei denied the allegations though in the end caved.

But if at all possible, business doesn’t let politics intrude. So it is that Friday we learned that Bain Capital is paying $2.2 BILLION to acquire 3Com. Part of the deal involves China’s Huawei Technologies, which will acquire a minority stake in 3Com.

And, oh, by the way, Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor running for the Republican presidential nomination–he headed Bain Capital for 14 years.

Six degrees of separation. In this case only 2–but who’s counting.
I wonder whether a future President Romney might have commented on Huawei figuring in a major U.S. tech acquisition. I’m darned sure candidate Romney has since turned off his cell phone for an early start to the weekend.

Orit Gadiesh , a striking Israeli with purple hair, flamboyant jewelry and short black skirts, was elected chairman in July after a 17-year Bain career that marked her as one of the company's brightest, most inventive consultants in a profession dominated by aggressive young men with Ivy League MBAs.

Gadiesh , who refuses to give her age but who acquaintances say is in her early 40s, is an intuitive, straight-talking consultant who has a reputation for staring clients in the eye and delivering the news bluntly.

Those close to Bain, including Gadiesh herself, give the credit for Bain’s revival to W. Mitt Romney , a former Bain consultant who stepped in in 1990 at the behest of the company's partners to become chief executive and straighten things out. He has since left to try politics.

But Gadiesh (pronounced GUH-deesh) took on a visible role in holding the company together at its darkest hour. “Everybody looked to her to see what she would do,” said Keith Aspinall, a Bain partner.
