IT TOOK A MATTER of seconds during a gathering with constituents at a Tucson shopping center for Rep. Gabrielle Giffordss (D-Ariz.) life to be profoundly transformed. Ms. Giffords was one of 19 people wounded or killed there last year, allegedly by a deranged young man who inflicted unspeakable damage with the help of a semi-automatic weapon and an extended magazine clip. The bullet that pierced Ms. Giffordss head left her clinging to life; hers has been a remarkable rehabilitation over the past 12 months, during which she has learned to walk and speak again.

Ms. Giffords did not refer directly to the events of Jan. 8, 2011, other than to say that she remembered little about that horrific day. But it would be a disservice to her life and that of the others directly affected by this, and tragedies like it, to ignore the factors that precipitated the violence: the easy access to guns; the availability of accessories such as extended clips that make deadly weapons all the more lethal; and a porous and shoddy regulatory system that too often fails to keep these weapons out of the hands of dangerous or dangerously unstable individuals.
Mr. Obama last year delivered his State of the Union just weeks after the Tucson massacre and in the presence of victims family members. Yet he, like so many politicians intimidated by the gun lobbys muscle, could not muster a single word about the need for reasonable gun control measures to ward off such violence in the future. Perhaps he will find the courage to speak up this year, as Ms. Giffords looks on during her last State of the Union as a member of Congress.

"Only please, Brer Fox, please don't throw me into the briar patch."
“Perhaps he will find the courage to speak up this year, as Ms. Giffords looks on during her last State of the Union as a member of Congress.”
He should be fast and furious.
Hasn’t she been paraded around enough? What about all the others killed or injured? At least she finally positioned her self for lifetime benefits and has said she’s quitting.
A couple of thoughts....
1. Where was the barf alert?
2. DEFINE “reasonable” gun laws.
3. The dirt bag who shot her wouldn’t have HAD a gun if his mother wasn’t a demoncrap bigwig who interfered with the process, so that the gun laws on the books weren’t followed.
When he gets to that part of his intro, I hope there is a voice from the crowd: Congressman Issa here, since you brought up the subject, did not Fast and Furious put you and your administration in the business of arming Mexican Drug people and lead to the death of many Mexicans and US personnel?
I agree.....Everytime I hear this woman’s name I roll my eyes....Will not be watching tonight (and never did/will)....
But, but, but the killer was a DEM.
In the comments on an article somewhere online that I cannot find now, someone said that she waited till one day after qualifying for retirement to announce. Any truth to this statement, FReepers?
I’m not sure about the one day part of your statement, but she did wait until she qualified for retirement. Here in her district in southern Arizona we all knew that’s what she was doing.
BANG!
Maybe we need a law saying Democrats can't get out of obeying the other laws. That would be pretty radical if enforced.
Best wishes, Gabby.
I’m not sure it’s possible, that demoncraps follow the law.
Laws are for us, “the little people”.
Taxes are for us, “the little people”.
It will be interesting to hear Bark Obama talk about his economic plan after cutting NASA (4.5 Billion in jobs and business in FLA) and killing the Keystone pipeline.
