Newt’s got some history of attacking conservatives, including Ronald Reagan. Unless we decide that conservatism is whatever Newt happens to think or say at some moment, say, when he’s paling around with Nancy Pelosi, we’ll have to realize he’s a leaky vessel to be the sole source of conservative orthodoxy. Newt’s fidelity to conservatism is similar to Romney’s. It’s just that some people are choosing to overlook it when it comes to Newt. I see no reason for us to close our eyes and pretend he’s been always faithful.

Context is everything. It seems odd today, but Reagan was often criticized by conservatives for not being conservative enough. Reagan had many moderates/liberals in his administration.

I agree with you. A better position to take regarding Newt would be to not try to pretend and make excuses for some of his non conservative positions, but to say that you know the flaws in Newt but feel there is a better chance for Newt to come around than there would be with Romney.

Like maybe 50/50? If you are lucky.

Newt at least HAS an established politically conservative record of sorts while Mitt has NO record of conservative public service—in fact quite the opposite as he was left of Ted Kennedy.

Both don’t always tell the truth but with Romney there is no proof he was EVER a conservative politician while with Newt there is.

I agree.

If he's going to be President, this will only work if conservatives DON'T gloss over Newt's foibles and failures and, rather, serve him strong notice that he OWES US this time and we WILL hold him accountable.

“Black-and-white” mentality takes one nowhere. This attitude that “If it’s my candidate, anything bad is a lie” is useless. I think Gingrich is the best of the bunch but this ostrich-like sticking the head in the sand is useless. We should, and Newt should, be open, honest and forthright about the way things really are, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Newt implemented a Reagan agenda while speaker. Romney explained he is NOT a Reagan republican. Newt has his weaknesses, but he is 80/20 a conservative. Romney is well under 50% conservative. He is miles better than commiebama but that ain’t saying much. He’s a terrible choice to be our party head.

LOL Romney is no where near a republican let alone a conservative and if there are sheep out there wanting to trust FOX and Drudge and their attacks and bias against Newt then so be it but that shows conservatives still have work to do in order to educate the sheep who call themselves republicans or conservatives.

FOX, DRUDGE, Coulter , Hannity etc are all talking heads for Romney is is the establishment and the establishment has sent out their memo to take Newt out.

As for Newt attacking ,please that is another piece of biased crap from FOX, Drudge etc.
Every admin has people who have disagreed that doe snot mean attack and Newt was coming from the right where as Romney has attacked from the left, hell he even ran to the left of Kennedy

If people don’t wake up to the MSM , yes including FOX , Drudge then the establishment gets their man and the people, the average folks, conservatives and this country lose out

Prepare to get flamed.

Newt is what he is. I am not happy about the people in this race, we loose either way. Newt has a better chance of representing my views on some things. Mitt is to the left of Obama more than he is on the right.

I honestly don't know if I can vote this time around.

—Newt’s got some history of attacking conservatives, including Ronald Reagan.—

And this is why Newt was not my first choice. That said, your argument sounds like one made in 2008: “Sarah’s not qualified to be president.” To which I responded: “Compared to whom? Obama? Don’t make me laugh.”

Newt was not my first choice. I’m not even a big fan. But compared to who he’s running against, he is really the only* choice for a conservative.

*The only current viable republican candidates are Newt and Romney.

BS dude. Gingrich isn’t liked by the establishment because he says what’s on his mind and he identifies with the palpable anger out there. It has NOTHING to do with his so-called attacks. Take off your blinders or GTFOOH.

I agree with everything you say. At the same time, it doesn’t change the stats on Drudge’s site about the one-sidedness against Newt. It’s so obvious, that it’s starting to look like a Romney Campaign Website.

Yes. And pretending, or, not paying attention is rampant . . .

Newt isn’t perfect but he’s better than Romney. Dwelling on Newts problems will only help Romney and hurt America.

Baholney..both Michael and Nancy Reagan are backing Newt and taken in context, Newt’s comments on Reagan were not an attack. Nothing compared to Romney’s almost complete rejection of Reagan in his run for the governorship!
