Bob Dole beatdown: Nominating Newt would cause “an Obama landslide”
SFGate.com ^ | 1/26/12 | Joe Garofoli

Former Senate Majority Leader — and 1996 GOP Presidential nominee – Bob Dole just tore into Newt Gingrich with an open letter that violates Reagan’s 11th Commandment so many times, Bob Dole will be in the confessional until Easter.

...

.. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.

...

Gingrich had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall. He loved picking a fight with Bill Clinton because he knew this would get the attention of the press. This and a myriad of other specifics helped to topple Gingrich in 1998.

In my run for the presidency in 1996 the Democrats greeted me with a number of negative TV ads and in every one of them Newt was in the ad. He was very unpopular and I am not only certain that this did not help me, but that it also cost House seats that year. Newt would show up at the campaign headquarters with an empty ice-bucket in his hand—that was a symbol of some sort for him—and I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it.

...

The reaction from Camp Newt:

“It’s got to be on the top 10 list of the weirdest things he’s ever written,” Gingrich spokesperson RC Hammond told Talking Points Memo at a campaign event in Jacksonville, FL.

Bob Dole is one to talk. Worst candidate ever by the GOP. Even McCain was better than Dole.

I never could stand Dole or McLame, and seeing McLame with Romney the other day only made me want Romney even less. I wish Romney would just take Dole and McLame with him wherever he goes on the campaign. With friends like that, who needs enemies.

Well of all major party candidates, Bob Dole is one of only three landslide election loser in history where the winner couldn't even crack 50%.

The others were Stephen Douglas who finished 10% behind Lincoln in 1860 and Taft who finished 19% behind Woodrow Wilson in 1912. Dole kept within 8.5% of Clinton, not quite as well as McCain did against Obama. You can look it up.

First, McCain chimes in. Now, I’ve heard everything - Dole opining on who or what a winning republican would or would not look like. Good grief.

Let's take what we have heard from all the GOP rulers about the GOP congress from 1994 to 1998 and compare it to the GOP Congress from 1999 - 2006. JUST TO BE FAIR...

The moment Newt left the new GOP went on a spending spree. The budget, under the new GOP control, was already projecting to be in deficit before 9-11. This was thanks to the wonderful GOP members who overthrew Newt and assumed leadership. Let’s see the disasters who took over:

Tom Delay: Serious ethic charges, but got rid of Newt because of trumped charges….

Lindsey Graham: The group complained that Newt compromised with Clinton, yet Lindsey brought us the gang of 14 AFTER the GOP secured a large senate majority in 2002.

John Boehner. What a disastrous leader. He compromised with Obama before the GOP took control in 2010 and gave us Obama’s new policy on Gays in the military and blew the opportunity to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. Barely over a year as house leaser and there are already whispers about his ability to lead. He is so busy crying, he can’t see when he is being owned.

Former Senator Jim Talent who is Fellow at CATO and a Romney supporter is one of those insiders. Mark Levin tore apart Talent’s radio spot the other night. In the spot, Talent claims the GOP got rid of Newt because he was unpredictable as a leader. Levin stopped the tape and said, “No, you got rid of Newt because you all were cowards”. Talent lost in the Senate in 2006 to a weak and empty Claire McKaskill. He ran a pathetic campaign but yet claims Newt will be a disaster on the campaign trial.

Under Denny Hastert, the GOP went on to record spending and government growth. Ear marks and cronyism were the rule, not the exception. In essence, these Morons gave us Obama. Now they want to give us Romney and if we do not support them, we will be responsible for re-electing Obama.(?) What hypocrisy- the people who gave us Obama are going to blame us for his re-election.

This development reveals, I think, a great deal about the current state of “leadership” in the Republican party.

When losers such as Dole and McCain are held up, and great weight is assigned to their pronouncements, it’s way past time for a thorough housecleaning.

“.. with age comes wisdom.. sometimes.”

Yep, along with alzheimer’s, parkinson’s, and incontinent bowels. Sounds like Bob Dole is suffering from all the above.

Also, would like to ask Bob why he thinks anybody should listen to him blather about Newt. If memory serves me correctly, that idiot suffered a landslide loss to Clinton.

"....Well of all major party candidates, Bob Dole is one of only three landslide election loser in history where the winner couldn't even crack 50%..."

SLAP! Mediocre/Friend to every Rat in Congress, Bob Dole. It's been 16 YEARS (that's a LIFETIME in Reality...meaning "being out of Congress") since he was in the spotlight and NOW he feels compelled to utter blatherings from the bed. Say G-night Bob.

What's the problem with Kansas?

1936: Alf Landon (R-KS), 8 electoral votes--FDR (D-NY), 523 electoral votes.
1996: Bob Dole (R-KS), 159 electoral votes--Clinton (D-AR), 379 electoral votes.
