Actor Ian Somerhalder has vowed to launch a private investigation into the cruel killing of an Arkansas family's cat after it was skinned as part of a sick political protest - if police refuse to chase the murderers.
Jacob Burris, the campaign manager for Arkansas Democratic congressional candidate Ken Aden, found the family's pet slain on his doorstop on Sunday, with the word 'liberal' inscribed along the dead feline's back.
Burris contacted the Russellville Police Department to report the act of animal cruelty and now The Vampire Diaries star has taken to his Twitter.com to express his disgust and demand appropriate action be taken to catch the sick perpetrator.
In a series of posts on Thursday, he writes, "Let's get to the bottom of it. Whomever it is should be prosecuted to full extent of law. This kitty killed in Arkansas with LIBERAL scribed on its fur."
"THIS IS NOT OAKY (OK) IF police do not or will not find party/parties responsible, I will start a PRIVATE INVESTIGATION into the matter. I sure many of you agree."
Yeah, this has most of the hallmarks of a textbook self-inflicted hate crime as a plea for attention.
* Crazy crime/vandalism that sounds more like something from a movie than acts you typically read on the police blotter? Check.
* Committed in an area where the victim group is much more prevalent than their supposed “haters”? Check.
* Victim is in a position to materially benefit in some way from the sympathy and attention following the incident? Check.
The only thing missing is the poorly mispelled epithet, or the incendiary logo drawn improperly. However, using “liberal” as a hate epithet is similarly a giveaway that the perpetrator is not really a conservative. A conservative, in anger, might call someone a socialist, a commie, a traitor, etc, but would consider the label “liberal” as being pretty mild. Someone who would hate lefties enough to kill a cat to send a message like this would certainly come up with a more insulting term to use than liberal. The most reasonable conclusion is that the word was inscribed instead by someone who considers themselves a liberal and is looking to drum up sympathy.
Perhaps they wrote “Liberal” because “Progressive” wouldn’t fit.
By stencil I mean the prankster would have made a custom stencil saying “LIBERAL” in advance of offing the cat. So pfft, pfft with some spray paint and he/she would be done.
Or it’s possible (I hope it was so for the cat’s sake) the cat croaked of its own accord, and this malicious minded “liberal” made some feline hay while the moon shone.
Man, you just gave me an image in my head of a guy writing P R O G R E S S I... and then saying “Crap! Go get the other cat, I ran out of room!”
