Population increase is a natural sign of political health. By that measure, Baltimore has been sick a long time. Six straight decades of depopulation have reduced the city by a third.

The "experts" assert that immigration is the key to a population rebound. In his Persian Letters, Montesquieu reflects on the fate of the great cities of Constantinople and Isfahan: "People, attracted for a thousand reasons, ought to flock to them from every direction. Yet they are decaying internally and would long since have perished, had not their sovereigns in almost every century caused entire new nations to enter and repopulate them." Reliance on immigration can stave off collapse but does not remedy the fundamental causes of decline.

Not as well-known is that Maryland has a very high abortion rate (third highest among the states in 2005, the year that the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene stopped collecting abortion statistics). The breakdown by jurisdiction reveals that Baltimore City is driving those deadly numbers, and also that the abortion rate among African-American women is at least triple the white rate.

For comparison: In 1970, Baltimore City abortion rates for single white and black women stood at 7.43 and 10 respectively (the abortion rate is the number of abortions per 1,000 women ages 15-44), with the married women's rates half that. By 2005, the Baltimore rate was 86.2. The National Abortion Rights Action League, which cites that figure, did not provide the African-American rate, but it would be substantially higher.

Lest one think that poverty accounts for this shift, the poverty rate in Baltimore has remained relatively fixed at around 20 percent for decades.

It seems that there is something inherently unhealthy over time in cities both physically and mentally. I would love to find statistics as to how many people end up going back at least seven or eight generations in a huge urban area. It seems that families tend to dwindle or move back out of the cities eventually. I suppose figures from say India nor China might be useful for such an analysis since they have more ancient urban areas. The old argument that urban areas could be inherently immoral might have some merit. The high use of drugs, the crime, unemployment and abortions in huge metropolitan areas seems to support this. The real problem is when cities have outgrown their purpose the local governments seem to try and retain their power by trying to create life support for their dying city rather then creating new purpose. They drive out the people and companies who might create jobs by excessive taxation to support the dying population numbers.

Only a leftist would have so little understanding of the fact that actions have consequences that the word "hidden" could make sense in that title.

Abortion is only a small part of the problem. The big problem is that almost all the law abiding white families have left. No normal responsible white parent would raise their children in the City of Baltimore. No responsible man would let his wife or girlfriend live within the city limits and be unsafe.

The only people left in Baltimore are the scum of the earth. Criminals, street thugs, welfare parasites and other lowlifes.

That is the real problem.

Ancient cities were the engines of trade; there was no “safety net” or “gubmint housing” to attract the least productive members of a society to the cities (they wouldn’t even be able to eat). As our manufacturing disappeared, there was no reason to even be in a city; anything you wanted to buy is a mouse-click or a suburb away. Today cities are just trying to justify their own bureaucracies, and if that requires them to open the floodgates to illegals then so be it (why else would you need so many teachers, cops, and other gubmint workers)?

The recent layoffs in NJ cities of many cops, firemen, and teachers was simply adjusting those workforces to levels that more accurately reflect the number of taxpayers in those areas (and they haven’t come close to trimming them enough yet). The underground economy of illegal aliens and our permanent underclass ensure that our cities will deteriorate at an even more rapid rate; our state gubmint is out of money that was traditionally used to mask these shortcomings.

God bless Governor Christie; he is the voice of sound finance here in NJ.

It’s not that, as you say, responsible white parents have left the city. Responsible parents of every race are leaving the city. It’s borderline racist to insinuate that only white parents want the best for their children and will leave the city. There are many of my neighbors who are black parents who left the city as well.

Over 54 million deaths by abortion have occurred in the United States since Roe v. Wade was so mendaciously decided by SCOTUS. The so-called right foisted upon us in that decision was made of wholecloth. There's an excellant article by my classmate at the University of Miami School of Law, Susan E. Wills.
