Romney's tithing raises issue in other churches
Sacramento Bee ^ | January 26, 2012 | Jennifer Garza

Mitt Romney's tax returns reveal that the Republican presidential candidate does something fewer Americans do these days: He tithes.

Romney's 2009 and 2010 tax returns, released Tuesday, show that he and his wife, Ann, gave 10 percent of their income, about $4.1 million, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The couple reported income of about $43 million for the two years.

LDS church members must tithe to participate in temple rituals. Nearly 80 percent of Mormons tithe, a poll released this month by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life shows.

While tithing among Mormons is high, it is at an all-time low – less than 3 percent – among many faith groups, according to an October report by Empty Tomb, a Christian research organization. The theology behind tithing is also being questioned, with many saying the mandate to contribute 10 percent is not biblical.

Tithing has its roots in the Old Testament – "Bring all the tithes to the storehouse," from the book of Malachi – and means one-tenth of income.

"The New Testament says a Christian is saved under grace and it does not teach tithing," said Russell Kelly who argues against it on his website, www.shouldthechurchteachtithing. com. "A lot of people would rather stay home than go to church and hear about it. All it does is make them feel as if they're cursed for not giving 10 percent."

How can this be brought up, but not that mess up there’s giving less than 1% to any kind of charity at all last year?

Sorry, I did misread your post.

We are fellow soldiers in the battle against the powers and principalities of MormonISM.

I’m yet to meet one of the Pastors you’re referring to. These pastors that you speak of, the ones who obligate their flocks to give 10%, do they kick people out who don’t pony up?

If you're a Mormon and you don't tithe, you lose your temple recommend.

If you lose your temple recommend, you lose not only your "forever family," but hope of reaching the celestial kingdom (highest degree) & you won't become a god of your own planet.

If you lose out on the celestial kingdom, Mormon theology is that you won't live forever with Heavenly Father.

So the tithe in Mormonism is linked to being "kicked out" of Heavenly Father's presence. Mormons say you can still live forever with Jesus, but not heavenly Father.

Hence, when Mormon leaders hold over your head...
...living forever with Heavenly Father...
...living forever w/your own family...
...becoming a god...
...well, hey...now you know why about 80% of Mormons tithe.

That's also sheer legalism.

well, hey...now you know why about 80% of ACTIVE Mormons tithe.

There fixed for you. Since we know there are not more than 6 million that actually show up once in a while, the numbers from PR dept. are somewhat misleading.

No prob. I take part of the responsibility, due to my method of quoting other posts. I’d really like a “quote” button as is the internet norm these days.

Technically speaking, Freerepublic is to other sites what DOS is to Windows.

Ok...

I passed it by at first; because most of these videos are lame, Lame, LAME! (That's 3 lames).

But since CC insisted, I went back and looked. And I am GLAD I did!

I could find NOTHING that was inaccurate. Listening to a REAL human is a LOT more enjoyable than those SP characters!

I will now send this out to my e-mail folks (who are wondering about my OBSESSION with MORMONism anyway...

Small correction for you.

watch their grandchildren's baptisms in the Temple

Baptism happens at the local church building, not the temple, and the public is welcome. It is "baptism for the dead" that happens in the temples, and is not something that people tend to "watch."

I understand. But I haven’t had to type “C:\” since Windows 95. I could do it if I wanted to, but why?

The only time I bother with manually typing html is if I have to, as when I want to embed a graphic. The rest of the time I don’t bother. hence the “—” before and after what I quote.

And it’s why I used the analogy I did.

I feel compelled to correct the abundance of misinformation being dished up:
* Mormons pay tithing to their bishop privately
* Bishops are not paid for their service
* The LDS Church’s humanitarian efforts go far beyond it’s own members
* Other Christian religions also require tithing.
* There is no indication in the New Testament that tithing was abolished
* The tithing pays for more than buildings, which are used every day of the week.
* Mormon missionaries typically save for their missions, or are supported financially by their families.
* In short, tithing is a principal of faith for members, that we give as gratitude and through obedience to God. To suggest otherwise is for the most part just ignorance and hateful. If I paid tithing just to attend the temple, you could at least surmise that attending the temple also has deep significance to members with regard to their commitment. I imagine that most of you have your minds made up and have never bothered to really speak to many members to understand us. I challenge you to be more honest in your judgements.
