While my new gun was being transferred to the District from Virginia, I returned to D.C.s Gun Registry Office to turn in my registration application. As you will see in what follows, this should have been simple step, but it took all day. Like everything else in my effort to get a legal handgun in this city has been far more complicated and time-consuming that it needed to be.
DOORMy gun dealer in Virginia provided the UPS tracking number of my package so I knew that it was going to be delivered to our one gun dealer, Charles Sykes, sometime on Wednesday. Late morning, I took the Metro down to Judiciary Square and walked over to the Metropolitan Police headquarters.
THE PROCESS
Like every time Ive been to the gun registry office, I was the only one. People aren't lining up to be put through the hassle and expense needed to legally register a firearm. I approached the counter that comes up to my chest and saw a female police officer sitting at her desk. When she looked up, I recognized Officer Brown.
Hi, I bought a gun, but it hasnt come in yet to Sykes, so I want to take the written test while Im waiting, I said, referring to Charles Sykes, D.C. only gun dealer, who transfers the firearms into the city.
In the mandatory ownership class, four of the five hours are spent going over the gun-control law in D.C. which are also written out in the registration packet. This mind-numbing exercise more than prepared me for this written test on the District's gun laws, but Id studied my papers on the Metro just as a refresher of the more obscure regulations.
You get your paperwork from him, and then you come up and start the process,

But all of this process is important, because if somebody was mad at an elected official, they’d have all of these cautionary steps in place to be able to track down anybody who did something bad........
Good thing “I” am not a bad guy.
I simply carry to protect myself.
Screw all this obstruction.
Can you imagine, once she has her CCW in D.C., if she’s ever stopped in D.C.???
She will have followed every aspect of the law precisely, and they will still take her weapon and lock her up, while they “investigate”.
After they let her out of jail, they will NOT return her weapon!
Save this post, because she will be tracked and hassled!
These hoops aren't for CCW. They are for possessing a handgun in her home/apartment.
I’ve lived in DC and I know how the bureaucracy can be but this makes Norway like an open carry state.

Fine...
My point is the same, if she’s ever stopped in D.C. while transporting the weapon, she’s toast, no matter how precisely she’s following the law.
Except she's burnt toast if she's carrying - it'll be a felony, not just loss of her pistol.
If I recall correctly, there is a lawsuit underway that asserts the DC hoops for keeping a firearm represent an infringement.
I wonder how many people have the same understanding you did, that she is describing the process for a license to carry concealed, in public.
It was doubtless easier to get a gun “legally” in the Soviet Union than it is in Washington DC...
This just goes to show you howwinning a case in the Supreme Court is not the end of the problem,, Just the beginning.
DC knows that very few people will put up with all of this BS to get a weapon. They also know that a weapon can be bought off the street in Anacostia from a local unauthorised gun and drug dealer in less than ten minutes.
DC is just having fun with law abiding citizens while catering to criminals.Officer Hall who stated”when in Rome, do as the Romans” is still laughing his ass off at hassling Miller.
I have to agree with him a little though, Find another place to live DC is so filed with criminals, Traffic camera’s and torn up streets it isn’t a fit place to live.
Arizona- 1. Walk in the door 2. Choose your weapon 3. Complete FedGov form 4. Background check 5. Pay the man 6. Walk out the door with your weapon and ammunition
Lastly. Strap it on, loaded, open carry or concealed.
Still not Second Amendment clean because of the FedGov form and background check, but as close as you can get. Of course if you want to carry out of state based on reciprocity the concealed carry license takes time and some cash through the AZ Department of Public Safety.
There are restrictions as to where firearms carry is prohibited, a posting is required, otherwise your good to go, but those apply to a narrow range of locations. We’re working on it.
Uhhhh....noooo, she won't.
Emily Miller, Senior Editor at The Washington Times and a resident of D.C., has been trying to purchase a firearm for months now. Her saga has been chronicled in both articles and blog posts at The Washington Times. Next Monday, Miller is testifying in front of the D.C. City Council on the hardships of obtaining a firearm as a D.C. resident.
It is good that Emily Miller is documenting this BS.
I look forward to the interview on this evenings thread.
Good interview - just listened to it.
Misfired on the guntalk link.
