"Panetta said Pakistan can discipline Afridi in whatever manner it deems appropriate but the doctor should be released."

This sentence doesn't make sense.

I suspect all of our allied nation intelligent agencies are reluctant to share information since American politicians eventually compromise CIA sources. Remember the Senate Church committee with the blood of many of our good foreign contacts on their hands for exposing them.

Correction: the CIA ruse was not about Polio vaccinations, but about Hepatitis B vaccinations. The Polio vaccination campaign is real and ongoing. The Pak government is rightfully angry as the ruse endangered and created anger against real health care workers in legit vaccination campaigns.

It is an unfortunate price of war. That is the basis for the treason charge as vaccination campaigns have suffered and legit health workers have been denied visas and have been harassed by ISI agents.

Secretary of State Clinton called Pakistan President Zardari back on September 1, 2011 to ask for Afridi’s release from his arrest by the ISI.

A week later, the “Abbottabad Commission” imposed a ban on travelling for all persons related to Abbottabad incident, including Dr Shakeel Afridi. He was the only one named.

Later, his involvement in a fake vaccination campaign was leaked to the press by the Pakistani’s. That’s how it all came out.

There were 7 health care workers in the CIA op, only Afridi was recruited. BTW, a nurse did get into the compound but didn’t succeed in getting any DNA.

Afridi deserves some of the reward. BTW, his family has gotten out of Pakistan and he will likely get out too after things cool down.

Thanks for the update. I hope the Pakistanis don't have him rubbed out. He really went out on a limb. Whatever his motivations, he deserves to be rewarded, not tortured, killed and dumped in an unmarked grave.

Thanks gandalftb. If he’s so worried about him, why does he bring it up?

Afridi is a CIA asset, harm to him would scare off present and future assets, of which we have many in Pakistan. We need him out and promised him he would have our protection.

Panetta is telegraphing to Pakistan to let him go, that Afridi is a US asset and harm would have severe consequences. We have resettled all of Afridi’s family.

Afridi is actually being held by the ISI in a sort of house arrest, very comfy, in Peshawar. He is allowed to see friends and family.

Technically, Afridi is in a civil detention that can last only as long as the Abbotabad Commission lasts. We are trying to get them to set a timeline for ending it and thus releasing Afridi or charging him, which the Pak’s would be very foolish to do..

Unfortunately the Commission’s goals have turned from finding out how UBL could hide under their noses to a witch hunt for anyone that helped the raid.
