Arresting Christians costs U.S. city $100,000

A judge in Detroit has ruled that the decision by police in neighboring Dearborn to arrest a Christian pastor who wanted to hand out Christian tracts at the city’s Arab fest in 2009 will cost the city some $100,000...

Magistrate Judge R. Steven Whalen said his recommendation for fees and costs totaling $103,401.96 be awarded in the case that was handled by attorney Robert J. Muise.

Whalen said Saieg and his Arabic Christian Perspective organization sued Dearborn and its police chief, Ron Hadda, because after distributing Christian information at the event for several years, he was told police would arrest him if he gave information to anyone at the Arab fest.

The city had argued that it was ridiculous to think that because it lost the case, it should pay for Saieg’s legal fees.

WND also has reported that, the event was expected to draw “over 300,000 people from across the country, Canada and the Middle East.” The festival covers 14 blocks and is free and open to the public.

Qureshi and Mayel are former Muslims who are now Christians. Mayel’s parents emigrated from Afghanistan. Wood is a former atheist. All are from a Christian group called Acts 17 Apologetics.

In the following video after the arrest, Qureshi said his group took “extra precautions” to prevent disruptions by not handing out pamphlets and to speak only to people “who first approached us”:

Legal fees, but what about reparations?

A case like this ought to cost the city millions and get the people resonsible nice prison sentences for their blatantly illegal acts.

Making them pay is the only way this tyranny will stop.

The city should have gotten a much larger penality than 100k. They might decide they can afford to violate the rights of Christians at that low cost and just put it in their budget.

No wonder the street lights are being turned off all over Detroit and that whole city blocks are being turned over to the zombies that live there, or otherwise being bulldozed and returned to nature - this story tells us how Detroit would rather spend its few remaining nickels.

This notion that's peddled by the religious right - that they are oppressed is not true. Sometimes it's a cynical ploy to move their agenda ahead. The classic example being that somehow secularists are trying to eliminate Christmas, which strikes me as some kind of manufactured controversy.

What planet are their attorneys on? Is this their first time in federal court? Awarding legal fees is nothing new.

Small victory but we’ll take it. I agree the penalty should’ve been much larger. Not sure if it would’ve had much impact though - the city’s still playing w/other people’s money.

Good that such blantant illegal action got something. But should I agree it should have been more punitive. It needed to leave a mark or else they will continue down the appeasing RIP path.

I actually think there was a court ruling a couple years ago that eliminated that as a requirement.
