I'm not sure what I find more disturbing, that the NYC health department photoshops for propaganda purposes or that that aspect of the story is not discussed.

The stats from the article indicate that amputation occurs in less than one half of one percent of diabetes patients, yet this is the "standard" they use to dissuade you from eating fast food or what not.

Reminds me of things like when the surgeon general says that "no amount of cigarette smoke is safe" as if you'd actually be better off downing a cup of radioactive waste or botulism toxin.

If amputation is that big a risk from diabetes there ought to be plenty of one-legged actors to photograph. The fact that they had to fake it suggests it’s not that common.

There’s an estimated 20 million folks with diabetes, about 1/3 haven’t been diagnosed or treated. 5th leading cause of death.

I don’t know if this ad goes too far but it seems reasonable to have a public info campaign on the subject

PSAs are traditionally very stark — they always want to get your attention as quickly and completely as possible.

This sounds like it works, for what it is worth.

So, are we to gather that scientific inaccuracy and distortion, if not outright abandonment, of the truth is perfectly okay with you, as long as it advances a cause you happen to agree with...

How, errrr, Liberal of you...

If it gets one person to check, it is worth it. It can save a life and if they exaggerate the case to get the job done, I am OK with it. Diabetes CAN lead to losing a limb (or more) so it is scientifically accurate.

>>How, errrr, Liberal of you...<<

Only an idiot stoops to ad hominem when there is no need. If it was a mamby pamby commercial for fools like you it wouldn’t accomplish anything.

I know several older people with amputed feet and legs from diabetes, including some in my family. You probably don’t notice them because they are either homebound in a wheelchair or they wear a prosthetic leg in public. Diabetes is a very serious disease and more people need to be aware of it.

If diabetes “causes amputations in another 3,000” yearly do they mean to tell us they couldn’t fine someone for the ad who’d really lost his leg to the disease? Weird to me and I can’t blame the actor for being upset.

you'd actually be better off downing a cup of radioactive waste or botulism toxin.

That is safer, if you are swiping one of my cigarettes. Don't mess with my smokes. It's hazardous to your health. ;)

"I cried at my computer screen for, like, a minute."

Actor? Certainly a drama queen....

It's much easier, cheaper, and faster to buy a stock photo and alter it than try to arrange a casting call and photo shoot.

The model got paid for his work, signed away the rights to the photo, so he has nothing to complain about.

It was a stock photo. Meaning it was cheap. I could probably go out and buy it for $25.

Better to have a casting call/solicit headshots and go through that more arduous and expensive process? Not.

And really...the actor cried? Sheesh...

From the article: “Berry agrees he signed a waiver before the shoot, allowing for such alterations and distribution.”

What exactly is the cause of the shock?

"I cried at my computer screen for, like, a minute." Berry said

And I laughed at my computer screen for, like, a minute... at the thought of you, like, crying for a minute over a fake photo!

It’s not going to be cheaper if the noise from this snafu undercuts the effectiveness of the message and they have to do it over but your point is well taken.

Actually the stuff in tobacco smoke that causes cancer isn’t the nicotine, it’s the trace amounts of radioactive Polonium. For some reason, tobacco has an uncanny ability to absorb and concentrate trace radioactive components found in soil.

I find it disturbing that he sat at his computer and cried for like a minute about it.
