Nobel peace prize jury under investigation

By KARL RITTER | Associated Press – 10 hrs ago.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) — Nobel Peace Prize officials were facing a formal inquiry over accusations they have drifted away from the prize's original selection criteria by choosing such winners as President Barack Obama, as the nomination deadline for the 2012 awards closed Wednesday.

The investigation comes after persistent complaints by a Norwegian peace researcher that the original purpose of the prize was to diminish the role of military power in international relations.

For example, in 2007 the prize went to climate activist Al Gore and the U.N.'s panel on climate change, and in 2009 the committee cited Obama for "extraordinary efforts" to boost international diplomacy.

While they should be condemned for giving it to Obama and Algore, I’m not sure the original intent for the award is a whole lot better.

Nothing to see there. They’re being criticized for not being liberal enough.

Even so he’s got a point. The Peace Prize people were so hasty to give Obama a prize (apparently for not being George W. Bush) that they overlooked the possibility that most of the Bush doctrine would survive through most of Obama’s first term. You might think it ridiculous that anyone gives a prize for showing a weak military presence, but it’s even more ridiculous to give a prize for anything before it was earned.

1994 - Yasser Arafat
2001 - Kofi Annan
2002 - Jimmy Carter
2007 - Al Gore
2007 - Barack Obama

Quite a roster!

Even some leftists were not comfortable with 0bama getting the prize. They understood that it would affect the way people look at the Prizes. They’re right. More people realized that the prize is political and consider it a joke.

And had they had a crystal ball there in Norway, I wonder how that little escapade called Fast & Furious would have looked to them — leaking arms to quasi-military cartels in Mexico.

Too late. (yawn)
That silly “prize” is now and forever a laughingstock.
Nobody takes it seriously anymore.

If there was any question that it had been placed in the hands of fools, there is none now.

I know they do things more socialistically there in Norway than we are accustomed to on this side of the pond, but really. If I had been Alfred Nobel, I would have wanted the parliament and king to personally sign off on every prize. Not just some little committee they appointed.

GOOD...Obama’s Prize served it’s purpose.

That probably would have been okay since everyone knows that the more drugs you shoot/ingest, the more, ummm, ‘peaceful’ you are. Just look at those peaceful taliban.

Irena Sendler lost the Peace Prize to Gore. She helped smuggle hundreds of children out of the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII.

The Nobel Committee [getting humiliated and shamed] SUPPOSEDLY was going to give it to her the next year - but she died ...

Only living people can be awarded a Nobel [although, this year, they DID give one to a dead guy since they had already decided he was going to get it before he died].

Lets see ... saving hundreds of childre from death vs. making a damn movie ... Hmmmmm ...

Who is investigating them, and why? It’s their award. Let them award it to whomever they want, and get laughed at and derided to their hearts’ content.
