It is only half true.

Not only they are killing Christians and burning libraries which was predictable, in Egypt they even issued fetwa prohibiting selling and driving Chevrolet, guess why? Assad government with all it’s cons are secular people who recognize some liberties and sane enough to be a part of some agreements. They aren’t killing minorities for their religion.
Dictators like this are ideal ME leaders. You won’t get any better under process under way now.
There are numerous way to put secular dictators in line and no way to contain nutjob jihadies.
Just look at A-stan under Taliban. What kind of sanctions could you use on that regime?
