House explosion kills Josh Powell, husband of vanished Utah woman

The husband of a missing Utah mom blew up his home Sunday —apparently intentionally — killing himself and the couple’s two young sons, authorities said.

Josh Powell’s house in Graham, Wash., exploded and burst into flames moments after a social worker brought the two boys Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, for a visit with their dad.

Powell was under investigation in the disappearance of his wife, Susan, from their West Valley City, Utah, home in December 2009.

This is the one who said he was out camping with the kids when the wife disappeared. May the Lord comfort their family.

Now besides the death of his wife, he has to answer to God for killing his 2 kids. Hell is too good for this filth.

But, that being said, I am sorry for the families of him and the wife. May God have some mercy on them.

I saw this this afternoon and couldn’t believe it, it’s like a movie. Just too too sad for those little kids (and the family, her parents, I cannot imagine what they are going through). I wonder if they will ever find her body. My prayers for the family. At least I believe the boys are now with their Mom.

It would have been much easier for him to have used a gun.

Blowing up the house is what one would do if one were faking ones own death and the boys too, so that the law would not be looking for them. Just saying it might be a good idea for the law to fine tooth comb this situation.

Didn’t his father apparently pursue his wife and have porn on his computer?

Supervised visit, but the social worker let the kids go ahead into the house and was barred from entering, went and called the BOSS to report smelling gas...

Why would this idiot let the kids out of his control, and why would the first call be to the boss, rather than 911???

Prayers for the children, and his wife, and I hope the man finds the justice he deserves.

“Didn’t his father apparently pursue his wife and have porn on his computer?”

That would be tragic, but a parent like that explains how people can turn out like Powell. I'm not justifying, just pointing out that the residue of sick parents can hurt multiple generations.

If there was any suspicion at all that the father was involved in the mother’s disappearance, he should never have been allowed to see the children unsupervised. This is sickening.

Yes.

The father was creepy like him..apparently his reaction to this horrible event has been emotionless.

Susan Powell’s parents must be in such a terrible place right now with the death of their Grandsons. I can’t imagine the pain that they must be feeling.

he should never have been allowed to see the children unsupervised.

That's why the child welfare worker was there with the kids....she was supposed to supervise

Just last week Powell was denied custody back because the judge ordered him to have a psych eval done by court order. That must have sent him over the edge.

He has been nasty to her parents since Susan Powell has been missing. I could see this sick bastard killing the kids to hurt them more.

It may be that the social worker was a woman. But whatever the situation the man should have seen the children, if at all, in a supervised setting where he had not control and it could be verified he had no weapon. The social worker may have been in shock, and the boss could probably do a better job of mobilizing help.

I live in the area, and one of my church friends has a kid that goes to the school the older of the two boys attended.

I checked out a local TV station’s website to see the comments others were making. Can you believe there were some people actually DEFENDING Powell? They seem to think HE was the victim of the DSHS in not being allowed to see his kids.
How deluded can people be??

And then...doing what he did in taking the lives of his kids? I am a daddy, and by God in Heaven I would NEVER do something so cowardly and insanely cruel to my children, no matter how bad I thought things were.

We will now never know where or how Susan Powell died, because (though it was never proved) her killer has offed himself.

When he lost temporary custody of the kids I was hopeful that the grandparents or a child psychologist would be able to question them and find out what they remember about their mother’s disappearance. I’m sure Josh Powell feared this and that is why he killed himself. Those poor grandparents must be devastated and angry that he was allowed to spend time with those kids.

Apparently not..

"A social worker brought the boys to Powell’s house Sunday for a supervised visit, and Powell let them in but blocked the social worker from entering."

She should have not let those kids enter the house and at the very least called the police immediately.

I’m no fan of social workers and it’s easy to second-guess this woman. But, I suspect, even in light of the psych eval order and the disappearance of his wife, that she was completely caught off guard by the sort of agressive, malicious crazy with which she was immediately confronted at the door of the house. He blocked her entry, took the boys inside, locked the door and the house exploded.
