Mushroom pickers lost hope, considered eating dog (Pit Bull)

GOLD BEACH, Ore. (AP) — Dan Conne says he and his wife and son thought they were going to die after getting lost while picking mushrooms and spending nearly a week in the rugged forest of southwest Oregon.

They spent the nights huddled in a hollow log and considered sacrificing their pit bull, Jesse, for food.

"She's that good a dog, she'd have done it, too," Conne said.

But help finally arrived Saturday when a volunteer helicopter pilot decided to look outside the search area and spotted the family — Dan, his wife, Belinda, and their 25-year-old son, Michael — on the edge of a deep ravine in tall timber. The three were about 10 miles from the town of Gold Beach, roughly 330 miles south-southwest of Portland.

Ahh, but you cannot BUY the type of mushrooms this little family was looking for.

Not at the grocery store, at least.

It all depends.

If you are attempting to self rescue yourself then heading downhill and following water will lead to civilization - sometime in the future.

If you ain't got a clue - and looking at the pictures they don't - then staying put prevents you from wandering farther from the possible search area - or into an area that had just been searched the day before.

Interesting that between the three of them they didn't have anything to build a fire with.

Run, dog, run! Did they ask her? I noticed dad didn't step up to the plate... the dinner plate. We once had nextdoor neighbors who wanted to put their dog down. Poor thing dug a hole under the fence and stayed with us most of the time. Sweet little thing. They never let us kept her. When we moved, they did it.

You can bet they were not looking for the food variety.

Ha - my wife was reading One Second After and mentioned the part where they ate the family dog. She said, “I’d be more inclined to eat one of the raiders killed in that battle than my faithful boy.”

I can say this for sure: my dog would be eating a lot of “minced bad man.”

The son scored all of the mushrooms during that outing.

“What the article doesn’t mention is that they were found about 300 yards from a road and less than a mile from where they parked their car.”

Actually, that is typical for rescue operations. Sometimes even closer to the trail.

Courtesy ping to Chet 99 even though he he ...

Well, this thread just made me think of him.

lol

Hey, dog is a good meal. Anyone who says he wouldn't dare eat his own dog hasn't been starving, I'm guessing.

BTW, whatever happened to Chet99? I do miss him and his POV.

By the looks of the son’s eyes, I think we know who absconded with all the shrooms.

What idiots.

Roger that. And Drama Queens to boot.

I've gotten turned around in the woods before. I could even imagine making an unplanned overnight. (Almost happened to me, once. Was planning on making a big loop, and crossing a bridge to get home. Much to my surprise, it was washed out. Not enough time to backtrack before dark. Fortunately, I found a place to ford the river, get back to the car, and make it out to a pay phone in time to keep Mom from panicing......but I digress.)

But in this day and age? With Cell phones easily at hand? And having an entire week to figure a way out? And, having to "Eat the dog"? Sounds like these idiots watched too much bad reality TV. Some people shouldn't leave the comfort of their own neighborhoods. OR, living rooms, for that matter.

And BTW, if this is the same story I saw on the news, they "drank water from streams". Hope that they had some sort of purifier, or the sense to boil it. Giardiasis, or other issues like it, can be unpleasant.

Two of my fav quotes are from Fried Green Tomatoes, "It's hog killin' time" and "The secret's in the sauce."

Yikes, possibly a very good thing they couldn’t start a fire!

I remember a couple years ago in San Diego - a drunk guy out ‘hunting’ with a few buddies got hideously drunk - lost for a couple hours - and rather than flowing downhill (something in San Diego county that will lead to other people in less than a single days) - he decided (in Santa Ana conditions) to start a “Signal fire” that soon got out of his rather limited control - and went on to be one of the most destructive fires EVER.

The guy was something like 30 years old IIRC, of hispanic nationality, still living at home. His picture is in the Dictionary under “stupid loser” and “what not to do when ‘lost’ for a few hours in San Diego county”.

What a maroon!

Great observation about the Sun setting and them being 10 miles from the Pacific.

My advice to those lost - flow downhill.

Ten miles from the Pacific - it stands to reason that the majority of every rain drop that fell where they were makes its way back into the Pacific.

Apparently they are not as smart as a raindrop.

Yes, for the vast majority of people its better to stay in one place. Especially when they know there are rescuers out looking, as these folks did.

The father was injured and not very mobile. People get killed wandering around aimlessly.
