Mushroom pickers lost hope, considered eating dog (Pit Bull)

GOLD BEACH, Ore. (AP) — Dan Conne says he and his wife and son thought they were going to die after getting lost while picking mushrooms and spending nearly a week in the rugged forest of southwest Oregon.

They spent the nights huddled in a hollow log and considered sacrificing their pit bull, Jesse, for food.

"She's that good a dog, she'd have done it, too," Conne said.

But help finally arrived Saturday when a volunteer helicopter pilot decided to look outside the search area and spotted the family — Dan, his wife, Belinda, and their 25-year-old son, Michael — on the edge of a deep ravine in tall timber. The three were about 10 miles from the town of Gold Beach, roughly 330 miles south-southwest of Portland.

Bet they were near a good stand of miner’s lettuce, too. Some people shouldn’t be allowed outside.

If you are lost and and on your last legs, burn the damn woods down. They will find you in a hurry with the woods on fire.

They didn’t have anything to build a fire or even a lean-to shelter. No compass ,no map section of the area,no even basic knowledge that you can get from Outdoor Life or Sports Afield these folks are a Darwin Award looking for a place to happen.

OK, you don’t pick mushrooms in the dead of winter...

Coastal Oregon. Chanterelles are everywhere. Things are different here. Winter is kinda springlike. Spring is a soaker. They're lucky they stayed dry.

I’m guessing they were looking for ‘shrooms to sell. Big business around here.

Hope that they had some sort of purifier...

It's Oregon. You're better off drinking out of a forest stream, or a roadside ditch, for that matter, than from a tap in most places.

They couldn't hear a passing car 300 yards away?

Apparently not. Either that or they didn't know what it was.

Looking at the pictures, probably one of the saving graces for the dog was the fact that he is made of MEAT.

Depends upon if you are self reliant and reliant upon being rescued.

Injured and not very mobile sure reduces the attractiveness of a self rescue - but in NO WAY AT ALL did I advocate wandering around “aimlessly”.

I pointed out that without a destination people tend to travel inadvertently in a circle.

I advocated picking a direction (when proximal to habitated areas), namely downhill.

These people were going to starve to death lost in the woods a days travel from the Pacific ocean - how long should they have sat there and not made their way to the Pacific?

Agreed these folks are not the sharpest tools on the work bench

I'm guessing that the reason they went picking mushroom is that they couldn't pay for recreational chemicals on their EBT card.

You know, if my dog and I were ever lost in the wilderness I would be just as concerned about getting her something to eat. Without a doubt I know if she did find something to eat she would bring it to me to share, even if it was a dead old possum.

“couldn’t pay for recreational chemicals on their EBT card. “

Or they were going to sell Oregon truffles for $20/lb.

Good idea if they would actually find any. It appears that these three couldn't find their backsides with both hands.

That’s almost as bad as the couple that got lost in a cornfield.

If they weren’t so dumb, they probably could have used the battery from their cell phone to start a fire.

They were 10 miles from the pacific ocean and after a week they couldn’t find it? Here’s a hint: The sun sets in that direction.

_______

Exactly. But then you are a FReeper and have some sense, and sense of direction.
