June 20, 2011: In U.S., 22% Are Hesitant to Support a Mormon in 2012
Gallup ^ | June 20, 2011 | Lydia Saad

[Me: The title of the article says "hesitant," but the article says that 22% is a flat "no" in answer to the question ending with "would you vote for that person?"]

Though the vast majority of Americans say they would vote for their party's nominee for president in 2012 if that person happens to be a Mormon, 22% say they would not, a figure largely unchanged since 1967. [Me: Is less than 4 out of 5 really considered "vast?"]

The new Gallup poll, conducted June 9-12, finds nearly 20% of Republicans and independents saying they would not support a Mormon for president. That is slightly lower than the 27% of Democrats saying the same.

At 22%, Americans' resistance to electing a Mormon president, even one nominated by their own party, is exceeded only by their opposition to electing someone who is either gay or lesbian (32%) or an atheist (49%).

The stability in U.S. bias against voting for a Mormon presidential candidate contrasts markedly with steep declines in similar views toward several other groups over the past half-century, including blacks, women, Catholics, and Jews.

This may be less troubling for Romney in the GOP primaries, where the vote could be highly fractured anyway, than in the general election, where -- should he win the Republican nomination -- he would need nearly complete support from Republicans to be competitive with President Obama.

So Obama would have 22% of the vote locked up right out of the gate against Romney.

So they’ll vote for an America hating Muslim.

This country is toast. Hang on for the ride down.

And no, I don’t like Romney.

I think he has more than 22% locked up out of the gate. These people are hesitant to vote for a Mormon but a Muslim is fine...

There are plenty of Mormons I know that I’d support.

It just happens that none of them are named RINOmney.

Romney: For when you despise Obama, but love his policies.

It’s not my reason for not supporting Romney, but I can understand why it is a reason.

Another comment on the author’s use of the word “vast” to describe a 78% majority. If 78% is vast, does that mean it would be okay for a kid to tell his parents that he scored “vastly well” on his final exam if he got a 78 out of 100?

Well, 2% of mormons wont vote for anyone but a mormon. (all exit polls are showing 98% mormons are voting Romney)
The bigotry is from the mormons.

I wouldn’t vote for a guy who comes across to me as a used car salesman.

I call B.S.!! I think this poll is designed to try to make Republicans feel it's okay to vote for a Mormon.

"The new Gallup poll, conducted June 9-12, finds nearly 20% of Republicans and independents saying they would not support a Mormon for president. That is slightly lower than the 27% of Democrats saying the same."

This is the line that I find surprising and which cast doubt on the validity of the poll. Given the stats about how republicans are more religious than democrats, I would have expected a higher percent of republicans to have an issue with Mormonism than democrats.

"So they’ll vote for an America hating Muslim."

No they won't. They will vote for a true alternative to Romney/Obama.

And they will do that in hopes that eventually, the rest of the republican party will quit voting for whatever liberal candidate the democrats in charge of the GOP offer up, and join us in voting for a difference.

Romney vs Obama is not a choice. It's tofu vs tofu. We won't real meat! I'm not voting for tofu.

You’re not counting the fact that, I think, almost all Mormons are Republicans. Utah is the second most conservative state according to a recent Gallup poll.

That might influence it a percent or two.

They claim 6 million members in the U.S. I bet it’s more like 2 million including all the many splits they’ve had, like the fundamentalists and the strangites, etc.

So 2 million mormons out of (142 million voters (2004) * 39% republican) = 55 million. Okay maybe 4%. Still don’t believe the poll.

It would be easy to skew the poll though. Just oversample utah.

This reminds me of the old crank who refused to shake Romney's hand in 2008:

Voter refuses to shake Romney's hand
