American kids denied food stamps in Alabama under immigration law

By Liz Goodwin

Some U.S.-born children with parents who are illegal immigrants have been denied food stamps under Alabama's new immigration law, Southern Poverty Law Center President Richard Cohen told Yahoo News on Monday.

Five people have called into the group's Alabama hotline to say they were denied food stamps because they couldn't prove they were legal residents, even though the food stamps are for their children, who are citizens.

Cohen says the civil rights group, which has already filed two lawsuits against Alabama over the law, will most likely bring another suit over the denied food stamps.

The law makes it a felony for a government employee to engage in "business transactions" with illegal immigrants, which some government employees have interpreted very broadly. Illegal immigrants have been told they can't pay their utility bills or even their taxes because it would count as a "transaction" with the government, according to Cohen.

I’d love to see the dollar amount, that is given per month, per person.

In Idaho, a 24 yr old couple, with a 9 month old child are given ~$900/month in food stamps. My wife and I don’t spend a THIRD of that a month, yet we are actually working and earning money and paying the taxes that fund this outrage.

Minor Children do NOT recieve food stamps; their ILLEGAL PARENTS SHOULD NOT, EITHER.

This is an article that tells us what we already know: ILLEGALS ARE SAPPING OUR CITIZEN'S BENEFITS, AND TAXPAYERS ARE PAYING FOR IT.

I believe that the whole "Anchor Baby" issue needs to be re-visited, wherein some Foreigner gains access to the Country illegally, deposits a baby, and suddenly there's a New American Citizen? BULLSHIT!

There are plenty of churches, food banks, and other charities who would see that the kids get fed, if it really came down to it.

Besides, they had fun breeding them, they can have fun feeding them.

Yes. That's the realistic lesson of this story.

See, you dont have to deport them all. Just start by cutting off the gravy train. Free food and college is a great way to put up a sign in Mexico that says :”The US welcomes you with open arms, and hands of cash”

Imagine a Federal court ruling that an illegal alien has the constitutional right to do business with the local government, I can see it happening.

There is a basic legal principal here. Minors are to a great extent the legal chattel of their parents, unless the state intervenes and makes them charges of the government.

Children cannot thus be the *direct* beneficiaries of aid, it must go to a responsible adult, because children can neither sign for it in receipt, not be held responsible for contracts.

A state can refuse to give aid to a person of foreign citizenship. As such, those parents have the choice to either leave the state, to another state that does give aid to illegal aliens, or to their home country; or they can opt to not get aid in the first place.

That they live in economic hardship is not the fault of the state or its citizens, nor should they be held responsible for the care and feeding of foreign citizens, or their children, even if those children are US citizens.

This changes once those children reach the age of 18.

I don’t believe you. A single parent with seven kids in Florida doesn’t get that. Quit spreading false information.

:: even though the food stamps are for their children ::

BZZZT! Wrong!

Read the rules and regulations. Food Stamps are supplemetal to the PARENTS INCOME to ^provide^ for the children.

Dependents do not receive “food stamp” benefits.

Hmmm...if illegals are "doing the jobs Americans won't do" (h/t W), then they're obviously some of the few getting paid, right now.

Why the need for food stamps if they're some of the few who are privileged to be working?

Correct, and it should also be the legal principle used to Remove them from PUBLIC SCHOOLS, for it is the Parents who receive the Benefits for their children. If the Parents are here Illegally they should not receive ANY BENEFIT of Education for their offspring, regardless of their status.

That sounds about right. Our neighbors I think qualified for that much. And they, unlike the moochers I see at the checkout each week with their tattoos, iPhones, gold-wearing babies, and outlandish manicures, really do need the assistance. The husband has been battling brain cancer and they have two little ones. A good, Christian family who just needs help until they can get back on their feet.

Hodar said approx $900 which is wrong but not by much, a simple google search of Idaho rates show a family of 4 recieves $668 a month in food stamp assistance in Idaho.
