Santorum declared winner in Missouri, Minnesota

DENVER — Rick Santorum had a breakthrough night on Tuesday by winning the Missouri primary and the Minnesota caucuses, breathing life into his struggling campaign and slowing Mitt Romney’s march to the Republican presidential nomination.

Early returns had Santorum running two-to-one over Romney in Missouri, and the Associated Press projected he would win the state’s “beauty contest” primary, which awards no delegates but provides fresh momentum to the former Pennsylvania senator’s campaign.

Romney was hoping to extend his winning streak as he tried to strengthen his claim to the mantle of the presumptive nominee, but he was bracing for a loss in one or more states as Santorum made an aggressive run in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri.

Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.), who has yet to secure a win in the 2012 sweepstakes, mobilized his loyal support networks in the three states, banking on low turnout in the non-binding contests to give him a win.

Meanwhile, Newt Gingrich did not compete in Missouri, which was holding a “beauty contest” primary that awarded no delegates. The former House speaker looked past Tuesday’s contests and instead campaigned in Ohio, one of several delegate-rich states voting March 6 on “Super Tuesday,” when he hopes to jump-start his struggling candidacy.

The Colorado and Minnesota caucuses are not binding and would not award convention delegates, but at stake Tuesday night was the prestige of winning.

You need to chill, no candidate is perfect and Santorum is a good man. (I still support Newt!)

...so long as people don’t pretend that finding one conservative quote negates every non-conservative thing he said about the same subject.

I have no problem with that concept at all. My issue is with the constant bashing of Santorum by the hard core Newters on Conservative credentials while in the same breath claiming Newt is as pure as the driven snow on them. It defies logic. At least I haven't seen someone say anything about Rick being Milts stalking horse on Rick threads tonight...YET.

That Jefferson County right next to Denver County makes me a bit nervous that hasn’t reported - is that county urban or suburban? If the latter that might be good news for Santorum, but if culturally more similar to Denver that would probably be another stronghold for Romney and might be one with considerable population vs. the rural areas.

Well, that Jefferson County just reported in - a lot of votes there and Romney carried it, but just by a handful of votes. Good news.

Good news for Mr. Santorum.

Now, if he wins Colorado, then watch out, Santorum supporters! The cannons will aim on him because no one must be allowed to come between the “inevitable nominee”!

So, am I just supposed to ignore Santorum’s pattern of disinformation just for the sake of winning the nomination? If he can’t even fight fair, what makes you think he’ll lead fair?

Sorry, but I simply can’t support him, and I am extraordinarily surprised by how little any of this matters to conservatives. They all insist he is a good candidate as if they haven’t even noticed his deception!

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever had ONE Santorum supporter EVER address any of my charges against him. They simply say “it’s campaigning” and downplay its true, ugly nature.

This is quite depressing.

Just wait till how surprised they’ll be when Santorum turns into a whiny blob of mush when the lie machine is turned against HIM for a change.

Your “reasoning” is disjointed, judgmental, personally biased and not helpful to the conservative cause.

What about Broomfield and Arapohoe? They are next to Denver and haven’t reported in yet.

I would have thought Romney would have ran away with all the counties around Denver. He isn’t. And there are a lot of rural counties still out.

Okay, so when I point out examples of Santorum going hardcore malicious and deceptive on the substance of an idea he is disagreeing with, this is “disjointed, judgmental, personally biased”?

Does it not disturb you that this guy can’t even hear one thing from an opponent without looking for a way to use it to damage his opponent?

You’re in a freaking bubble.

You hit the nail on the head - ironically he is behaving in exactly - exactly - the same way he claims Santorum acts which are his alleged reasons for not being able to support him.
