Santorum says ‘other types of emotions’ could preclude women in combat.
Washington Post ^ | February 8, 2012 | Jennifer Rubin

“I think that could be a very compromising situation, where people naturally may do things that may not be in the interest of the mission because of other types of emotions that are involved. It already happens, of course, with the camaraderie of men in combat, but I think it would be even more unique if women were in combat,” Santorum added. “And I think that’s not in the best interests of men, women or the mission.”

Such remarks may please some social conservatives who were never that keen on women serving in the military, but this may not sit well with women who work, sometimes in male-dominated jobs.

I am compiling an every-growing compendium, "Mr. Rick, the Deep Thinker." This will definitely make the cut, under "emotions, other types of, Sanctimonium".

He appears to be referring to men’s emotions.

Though according to feminism, men don’t have any.

Why? Rick only spoke the truth. Men can’t help having different feelings for women than they do for men. Guys don’t deal well with seeing women killed or maimed, and anyone who says different is a liar or a fool. Bob

I think Santorum is a SOB, but his opinion on this doesn’t offend me. He might even be right. Kudos to him for speaking his mind is all I have to say.

Now, how this plays out with the public... I don’t know.

Well, we can thank people like you when we see on CNN or all the TV networks when we see our women being slaughter in combat like hamburger meat.

Killed/maimed is tough. I’ve found for me that finding out one has been kidnapped is far, FAR worse. Can’t explain it, but there it is.

I'm guessing that the percentage of Americans who genuinely want women to engage in combat is about 2% -- and they don't vote Republican.

Santorum definitely comes off way too sanctimonious at times.

We all know he is ultra strong on social issues. So he has nothing to prove there... And only turns off others.

Absolutely. Men are only so strong. Look what happened to Lara Logan, another one who believed that the world was as she wished it to be. I admire Rick’s candor. Bob

You're head is just as deep in your behind as the authors here. Santorum is absolutely right. Men will get killed that didn't have to get killed because they have been taught since childhood to protect their sisters, their female cousins and women in general. Never mind the fact that 99.9% of women don't have the upper body strength to carry a full pack and ammo load. Of course theri will be young troops who will take up that slack and endanger themselves at the same time.

This is pretty simple stuff, you and Rubin should both buy a clue or two.

Nice catch. This is not about a woman’s emotions. Its about the additional mental pressures a male soldier would be under trying to prevent a female combat soldier from getting killed, raped, etc etc. The title intentionally tries to make it sound like Santorum thinks women’s emotions are not up for combat.

He could make a remark like that into a very good thing politically, based on exactly what you just stated about this referring to men's emotions. He could say that ‘he and many other men have been brought up to respect women and their intellect, and don't think of women as combat soldiers responsible for potentially killing others. Instead, they think of them as non-violent nurturers, like our mothers. In a combat situation this could lead to a difficult emotional situation for a man who, even knowing intellectually that women can fend for themselves, would feel a responsibility to try to protect.’

Some militant feminists would still be offended, but they aren't going to vote for anyone with an R after their name anyway.

Santorum is right. Women should not be in combat. What are you objecting to in this?

Santorum is saying the male/female relationships could compromise missions.

He is absolutely correct.

I remember talking to a brigade surgeon (a female) about the behavior of our troops “down range” when we were in Kosovo. She said that the females in that setting intentionally used pregnancy to get sent back home.

It’s not just “ain’t it awful”. That absence left a hole in a unit that then had to be filled in with extra work for everyone else. And that gap can’t be filled if the unit is attacked. That’s one less defender.

Do you believe what liberals believe; that men and women are the same? We’re not. Of course we’re going to act different because of the way we were created. What drives a person when they must make life and death decisions? Our emotions; how we react to fear, anger, witnessing death, and guilt....
