Color me skeptical that the Marine in question who owned the flag had no idea about its origins. And while one should roll their eyes about the hoopla surrounding peeing on dead insurgents, Nazi idolatry has no place in our military.

I, too, am skeptical, but, considering the state of our public education, perhaps they really never actually learned about the Nazi reign.

OMW! Someone has posted the photo at 11. I think it is a stretch to call in a Nazi flag.

The cluelessness of many on this thread is making me sick. That you would side with the PC police on this. The Marines’ flag was clearly for their Scout Sniper unit and not meant as one of those ink-blot tests.

To buy into this fabricated story and turn on Marines is appalling. There is never a word from the media about the Che t-shirts so many “youth” wear or the 100 million that Communists murdered, largely Christians, in 20th century alone. It is the Communists who continue to rape and pillage to this day. It is the Communists who control the media, the entertainment industry, the gubt skools, everything in D.C.

Much ado about nothing. I certainly hope none of you PC nannyists find out that HMLA-169 has two iron crosses painted on each one of their birds.

I presume that they person thought it looked good and lacked the intelligence or basic knowledge to freaking google "SS" to make sure that his new logo was not infringing on a patented image or was that of another group. Lazyness meets ignorance.
That stupidity is unbecoming of a scout sniper.

It won’t be the 1st time a Marine compared himself to the SS. I’ve heard other marines boast about that in the past. One told me when he was in Northern Germany a German asked what uniform he was wearing and he told the party it was a unit like the SS. Seems like there are many out there that wish they were in the Waffen SS. Yeah, they were the best trained and weapon supplied troops of that war and admit-ably no one in WW II took them lightly when faced with them. We never had a force like that, that was so feared, so there is no real comparison. It was at the time a prestigious unit for the Germans to belong to. I’m sure the former members of the “Waffen” SS were proud of their battle field experiences.

I often listened to Germans who claim they had family members who were in the SS. I heard that so often (true or not)I began to think that the Wehrmacht didn’t exist. No one ever admitted that they or a family member were ever in the SS “SD” units, which is understandable. The marine SS flag with the runes is nothing more than youth bravado. I’d say; “OK you had your fun with it, so, now can it.” I seem to recall that in the movie Platoon, there was a scene where an APC came to the rescue flying a WWII German battle flag, so maybe he got the idea after watching it?

BTW, I was assigned to US Army Special Services as an enlisted man, Gee, why didn’t I think of that? So all this time I too can say I was in the American Army SS. LOL.

What really needs to happen is careful indoctrination on what is not an appropriate photo to pose for.

“sniper scouts”

Another stupid reporter.

Scout/Sniper, not “sniper scouts”. They probably did take it from the Nazi SS. Bad choice considering history but considering that 99.9% of the US doesn’t know a thing about history they probably thought they could get away with it. I highly doubt they were trying to relate their unit to the Nazi SS but instead just thought it looked cool.

Political Correctness will cripple our military even more in addition to what FUBO is doing. Nothing we do or say will ever endear us to our enemies, so I’d prefer they fear and respect us. I want American “barbarians” to strike fear into muslim hearts for the next thousand years. I don’t care what others think so long as our military remember who they are working for and kill the right bastards. You mileage may vary.

For crying out loud. Is FR now becoming a bastion of bed wetting pansies?
Maybe we should do away with uniforms. After all the Nazi’s wore uniforms too.

These are kids away from home under pressure.

They were counseled and educated. The Corps issued
an apology and promised it would not re occur.
Thats good enough for me.

As Fr. Collins used to say to me at Confession, “Go in peace and sin no more”.

Marines snipers sporting lightning s’s are far less troubling to me than all the fat TSA rent-a-cops who actually behave like Nazis.

I’ve never in all my years met a Marine who acted anything like a Nazi.

I call BS.

The “SS” has nothing to do with Nazism. It stands for “Scout Sniper”, and it attempts to replicate lightning, within the context of sudden death.

Many of the snipers have it branded on their bodies (I estimate about 25% of my STA platoon sported them), and this was waaaaaaaaayyyyy back in the 1980s. The “brand” was voluntary, and was done after the candidate graduated from Division’s Scout Sniper School. It was also done with great pride within a service that has always prided itself as being the best in marksmanship. These guys are the best of even the best. It was normally done by fashioning a clothes hanger, and heated by MRE heat tabs, or sterno. And yes, a Navy Corpsman usually attended to the wound so that it wouldn’t get infected.

Furthermore, I have never met a SS that was even REMOTELY connected with Nazism. It’s not, nor has it every been a part of the STA ethos. Actually, they are too preoccupied with being the best in the business. And dealing death is their business.

Also, it is TOTAL BS that the Marine Corps acts like it’s new. It was never a secret: all of the Ground Intel officers and SNCOs that have ever served in a Marine infantry battalion have known. Most of the other officers knew too: you can’t hide their logo when it’s plastered in every room. So add every battalion SgtMaj that has EVER served in an infantry bn.

People will see what they want to see.

Oh good gravy.

These inconceivably brave men put their lives on the line and daily bear stresses and hardships beyond our dreams.

We civilians sleep securely because they do their dangerous and difficult job a half a world away from their families and loved ones.

But, God forbid, they commit a thoughtcrime.

Well, Marines have never been accused of being the smartest guys in the world. I bet you the Air Force knows what Nazi imagery looks liked, it seems that’s where the smartest people with the highest ASVAB go.
