What you say is true, there are different reactions to the loss of a child. We lost our 18 year old son and I could not bear to even look at his body. I closed my eyes when I approached his casket.

I find the fact that the Santorums took their dead child home so the other children could hold it a little bit creepy. How will the children look back on this event when they are grown?

I can see the creepy factor too. Just saying that behavior under this particular kind of stress is not the way to judge people.
