CATHOLIC CHARITIES CAVES. NOW WHAT?
Catholic Culture ^ | February 10, 2012 | Phil Lawler

Father Larry Snyder, the president of Catholic Charities USA, has welcomed the Obama administration’s “compromise” on the contraceptive mandate. He says:

This compromise enables Catholic Charities USA to not only continue to provide access to quality healthcare to its 70,000 employees and families across the country of many different faiths and backgrounds, but also guarantees the continued delivery of vital services to the more than 10 million people living in need across the country. So here’s where we stand: Within hours of President Obama’s announcement, without waiting for guidance from the US bishops, the heads of the Catholic Health Association and Catholic Charities USA—two of the largest Church-related employers in the country—have announced that they are now satisfied with the plan. Their defection will make it all the more difficult for the bishops to hold the line in defense of religious freedom.

There is a solution ready at hand, however. The US bishops could announce that, No, Catholic Charities USA will not provide healthcare under the terms of the HHS mandate—or it will cease to be called “Catholic.” (It would be a small loss; Catholic Charities USA today is mostly a conduit for government funds, carrying out government contracts.) And No, the Catholic Health Association will not accept the Obama “accommodation,” or else its member institutions will cease to be known as “Catholic” hospitals.

Tomorrow in Church the Archbishops appeal will be read. They will say how they support Catholic Charities. I think I will take my Bible and read it during the appeal.

Between ACORN and Catholic Charities I think I will hold on to that money.

The MA office of Catholic Charities folded like a cheap suit, when they were faced with losing funds over the issue of allowing adoptions by homosexuals. Not surprising the national organization would be just as inconstant.

There's a revised statement out now. First line: "Catholic Charities USA welcomes the Administration's attempt to meet the concerns of the religious community and we look forward to reviewing the final language"

Did you read the USCCB position paper posted last night? They demanded that the Mandate be revoked and said that this is just one more instance of the government interfering in people’s personal affairs. That is a direct reference to the Constitution. Nobody’s going to cave; too much is at stake. If they can do it to the Catholics, it won’t be long before every faith-based program of any religion is directed from DC. Suggest you check out their last release made last night.

As for Catholic Charities, it is a joke. Haven’t given them a dime now in over 15 years.

If the Catholic church as a whole caves, they will lose my support next time a crisis hits them.

Dear Fr Larry. You can get your pink slips ready. You forget who funds Catholic Charities...

The bishops have rejected the so-called "accomodation."

As for Catholic Charities, it sounds to me as if they have been gradually morphing into a Planned Parenthood moneylaundering racket now merely disguised as "Catholic Charities."

The other Catholic entity that caved is the Catholic Health Association vis a vis Sister Carol Keehan. As you all probebly know, she has already been in trouble with the bishops.

It has been suggested that the so-called accomodation from Obama was merely to appease Sister Carol Keehan and other liberal Catholics and to drive a wedge between them and their bishops.

I have been disgusted with the CC for years.
I will always be a Catholic but I don't have to be proud of it.

USCCB soon to follow in surrender! The objections of the USCCB was never going to be anything more than PR. Their real goal is a socialist utopia, murdered babies being just one of the costs.

Not according to the Bishops' latest statement.

A really really bad time to back down.

The Bishpops appeal to Catholic Charities is just beginning. I usually drop a $100 to them. Not this year, if this article is true.

EWTN might be a good one to donate to.

I will not be giving to CC this year. Mother Angelica could probable find a far better use for the money.

Thank you for posting this. I give to Catholic Charities USA once a year. The rest of the year I give to the local Catholic Charities which does a phenomenal job with multiple venues in central Minnesota.

I think the next time I get an envelope with a request, I will write a note to them and ask if they are in support of Obama’s Marxist paln to take over all the health care and charities in the USA. I wonder if they will respond.

We haven’t given to Catholic Charities in years, precisely because of this kind of attitude, which they’ve had for many years.

Sounds like whoever made the decision to accept Obama’s non-compromise thinks he serves A Very Small God.

When I get a letter from them, I will be sending them a letter informing them that because of their un-Catholic secularist "social justice" policy with regard to their acceptance of the contraception mandate, the money I would ordinarily have donated to them will be henceforth donated to the local soup kitchen and/or food pantry......because my way of helping the poor is by feeding and clothing them and not by preventing them from being born vis a vis contraception and/or abortion!
