CATHOLIC CHARITIES CAVES. NOW WHAT?
Catholic Culture ^ | February 10, 2012 | Phil Lawler

Posted on 02/11/2012 11:32:08 AM PST by Sons of Union Vets

Father Larry Snyder, the president of Catholic Charities USA, has welcomed the Obama administration’s “compromise” on the contraceptive mandate. He says:

This compromise enables Catholic Charities USA to not only continue to provide access to quality healthcare to its 70,000 employees and families across the country of many different faiths and backgrounds, but also guarantees the continued delivery of vital services to the more than 10 million people living in need across the country. So here’s where we stand: Within hours of President Obama’s announcement, without waiting for guidance from the US bishops, the heads of the Catholic Health Association and Catholic Charities USA—two of the largest Church-related employers in the country—have announced that they are now satisfied with the plan. Their defection will make it all the more difficult for the bishops to hold the line in defense of religious freedom.

There is a solution ready at hand, however. The US bishops could announce that, No, Catholic Charities USA will not provide healthcare under the terms of the HHS mandate—or it will cease to be called “Catholic.” (It would be a small loss; Catholic Charities USA today is mostly a conduit for government funds, carrying out government contracts.) And No, the Catholic Health Association will not accept the Obama “accommodation,” or else its member institutions will cease to be known as “Catholic” hospitals.

I believe so. However, my guess is that they will have a conversation with him first.

In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Father Snyder the newly created President’s Advisory Council of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. For a term of two years, Father Snyder worked with the staff of the Oval Office and 24 other religious and community leaders of diverse political, religious, and community backgrounds from across the country in promoting collegiality in finding community solutions and in offering advice on policy issues to the President.

Remember the point about seeing where they stand? Now their leadership is going to have to step up, or not.

No surprise here. As I pointed out last week when this story first got a lot of media scrutiny, the Obama administration was technically correct when it determined that these organizations were not eligible for the religious exemption under ObamaCare. Despite its name, Catholic Charities isn't a "religious organization" by any objective measure.

Having some Marxist dope with a white collar as the organization's president doesn't change that, either.

"Although all men are born free, slavery has been the general lot of the human race. Ignorant—they have been cheated; asleep—they have been surprised; divided—the yoke has been forced upon them. But what is the lesson? ... the people ought to be enlightened, to be awakened, to be united, that after establishing a government, they should watch over it ... It is universally admitted that a well-instructed people alone can be permanently free." - James Madison

Let the "instructions" about religious freedom, as well as the other freedoms set outside the purview of the government's authority by the First Amendment begin in every congregation and community in America!

For too long, the ideas of liberty were censored and erased from the "American mind" (Jefferson's description in 1776) by so-called "progressives" who now assume unconstitutional coercive power over the citizenry.

Their overreach has triggered a renewed interest in and devotion to Creator-endowed life, liberty, rights, and laws to protect them.

Although censored from the textbooks, Divine Providence may have outwitted the petty oppressors by allowing new technologies that make the writings and speeches of the Revolutionary period, and their ancient sources, available to every citizen with a computer.

Enlightened leaders must call our people to throw off the mindset of dependency on a self-appointed beneficent tyrant and "Proclaim Liberty throughout the Land." (Liberty Bell and Bible)

Unfortunately, there are opinion makers like Father Snyder who may not understand that those who become coopted by power become enslaved along with everyone else.

USCCB soon to follow in surrender! The objections of the USCCB was never going to be anything more than PR. Their real goal is a socialist utopia, murdered babies being just one of the costs.

If the bishops can’t, the pope can—BXVI appointed him. However, since this article appears to have gone public yesterday, we really have no idea of whether CCUSA jumped the gun.

Have you read the USCCB’s response to the “accommodation”? They’re calling for Congress to reinforce their rejection.

I agree with this. Watch how disappointed a lot of folks get when this whole thing shakes out.

The USCCB never had a problem with the ObamaCare mandates (which is why they never opposed ObamaCare -- and in fact openly supported many of its radical provisions -- in the first place). The reason they were so outraged over the administration's refusal to grant them this so-called "religious exemption" is that the decision basically exposed much of the Catholic Church in the U.S. as a complete fraud. These organizations that would have been required to meet the ObamaCare mandate are NOT religious organizations, folks -- they're enormous businesses that get a lot of their revenue through government programs.

Organizations like the USCCB usually have factions, with one faction gaining the upper hand on things like position papers while another retains ultimate power. Let’s hope this shakes out on the right side.
