Toilet-gate has California students flush with anger

CONCORD, Calif. — Instead of beating the bell between classes at Mount Diablo High, senior Charles Campos often finds himself waiting frantically for a chance to use a rare unlocked restroom on the sprawling campus.

Relief has been hard to come by since beleaguered Principal Kate McClatchy closed all but one boys and girls' bathroom to the 1,400 students last year. Although McClatchy unlocked a second set of restrooms this week, the dearth of commodes may violate the state's education code. She refused to say why she did it, but district trustee Gary Eberhart said he's been told it's because of graffiti.

So while McClatchy may have solved one problem, she has indisputably caused another. The lockout has made Campos and other students late to class, and those who skip the urinals in favor of making it to class on time are antsy and distracted because they couldn't go. A few have resorted to urinating in stairwells or other places, Campos said.

"And there's no toilet paper," Campos told the school board Monday.

Recognizing the urgent cause, the school's Amnesty International club has launched a new campaign: "Pissing is a Human Right."

There is a two part epoxy anti graffitti paint.
I applies like regular paint but is so hard once the two parts set up and dry you can just wipe it down with acetone and the graffitti comes right off and leaves the paint looking just dandy.
I had that problem at the Albertsons in West Palm and glades and Military Trail.
Folks use to paint nasty things on the back wasll about the local police all the time so the code enforcement always wanted the nasty stuff covered.
It was a great continuing source of revenue for my company but eventually the store asked for the good stuff.

I would paint the walls in chalkboard paint and keep chalk in the restroom—let the kids graffiti the wall, unacceptable words or images can be erased.

Similar to what a couple of divisions did in their heads (restrooms for you landlubbers) when I was on the USS John F. Kennedy. They covered the stall dividers with brown fire retardant paper, giving the sailors a place to do their graffitti (sailors would do it anyway) and making it easier to clean up for inspection day.

I’m surprised one of the students hasn’t taken a pry bar to the locked doors.

The students ought to just all use the principal’s office door for a urinal.

They can use a plastic bottle.

What if the screw threads on the bottle don’t match the screw threads on your butt? What then?

Give each family a voucher for each student equal to the amount the district spends per student and let folks sort this problem out themselves.

I suspect the “no bathrooms” school would have a hard time attracting customers.

Meanwhile the private schools have no such problem:

Clearly a situation where one would rather have them inside the school pissing out than having them outside the school pissing in.

“Since when was it right in this country to punish everyone for the crimes of a few?”

I agree 100%. I can’t stand “shotgun management”. Okay, some of the kids abused the privilege to use the bathroom. However, to have a student body of 1,400 and two bathrooms? That is just beyond stupid to me. I wonder if the kid’s get a doctor’s note requesting that the school accommodate the basic need of relieving themselves... what would happen? Would the principal be in violation of ADA laws? Meanwhile, urine in the hallways? At what point does this become a health violation? This article “pisses” me off (yes.. an attempt at a stupid pun)

My school did this exact same thing. They thought it would somehow combat the epidemic of teens smoking in the bathroom, so they put iron prison bars on all but 1 bathroom. So between classes, I had 5 minutes to sprint all the way across the school, use the bathroom, then sprint all the way back to my next class.

And when I got to that one bathroom it was so full of cigarette smoke I nearly collapsed of emphysema.

I remember many moons ago on one base where I was stationed, we had these huge paper pads in each stall. Everyone used to go in to read what was written there. The pads were tear off so any offensive stuff could be easily removed.

It was kind of an honor if you made the board.

Is this the latest Port-a-potty, or is it combined with a briefcase. I got my first laugh this morning.
