Protests got out of control Sunday and Monday as Greek lawmakers voted on a new round of grossly unpopular austerity measures.
But even as leaders make new promises to curb government spending and get the country's economy back on track, Greece is beginning to look more and more like a war zone.
According to Bloomberg, Greek police said in a statement that 45 shops were set on fire, 67 people were arrested, 75 people were detained, and 68 police officers were hospitalized during the protests.
And while clean-up crews are working to restore the streets of Athens to normalcy, it is probable that the anger that fueled yesterday's riots has not yet been extinguished.

It is sad that Greece that gave us so much of our modern civilizations foundations is now showing the way for its destruction.
The comments at the end of the story are not to be believed! These people are beyond delusional.
One of my poli-sci profs in 1980 was an anarcho-syndicalist. He was all for “workers owning the means of production” and not just in the BS Marxist sense. He actually thought the workers should handle all executive decision making in the company. I had just spent the summer working commercial construction, and I knew that if the “means of production” were turned over to the workers, three things were going to happen:
1. the building wasn’t going to get built;
2. because the “workers committee” was going to wind up meeting in the parking lot with a keg of beer and a bucket of chicken, and;
3. the “means of production,” being the company tools, were going home that evening and not returning in the morning.
Needless to say the prof was a silly academcian who never spent a day in a real job. My only regret was not feigning complete agreement with him, and suggesting that “students should control the means of production,” i.e; “grades.” I would have had us all vote ourselves A’s for the course and recessed to Nick’s for some beer.
"That's as good as money, sir....those are IOUs"
Right, it’s a system embraced only by the terminally naive/ignorant and power hungry thugs.
I visited Greece as a tourist 10+ years ago and loved it. I will not revisit Greece now, even though I want to, unless this mess and rioting stop. I’ve been to Italy many times and Spain once, again, no revisits for a while. A general strike can take days of fun away from a vacation as everyting is closed and transportation is shut down too. After this cold winter and the Euro problems, eastern and southeastern Europe is a mess for a while.
I visited Egypt and Jordan a few months before Arab Spring and it looks like those places are too dangerous for a westerner now and will be for years. Too bad as I walked or taxied all around Cairo, Amanan and other cities. I was going to Turkey this year but cancelled as the whole Mid-East is in trouble.
I guess if gas is not too high, it’s road trip time for the USA.
Coming to a street corner near you soon. Wait until those Peachcards don’t swipe at the sto no mo.
all by Syntagma square. (constitution square)
sad really.
most of the protestors are the usual anarchists and socialist government worker freeloaders who have do nothing jobs to start with.
been there during one of the more recent riots.
it still remains focused on constitution square.
Never even realized there was a riot until I was told later.
Can’t say about this one but can say that the reporters sstay in the luxury hotels across teh street and the rioters know it.
didn’t the hippie protesters say this upcomming dnc convention should be “party like its 1968”?
