Preschooler’s Homemade Lunch Replaced with Cafeteria “Nuggets”

State agent inspects sack lunches, forces preschoolers to purchase cafeteria food instead

RAEFORD — A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because a state employee told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious.

The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the agent who was inspecting all lunch boxes in her More at Four classroom that day.

The Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs — including in-home day care centers — to meet USDA guidelines. That means lunches must consist of one serving of meat, one serving of milk, one serving of grain, and two servings of fruit or vegetables, even if the lunches are brought from home.

When home-packed lunches do not include all of the required items, child care providers must supplement them with the missing ones.

The girl’s mother — who said she wishes to remain anonymous to protect her daughter from retaliation — said she received a note from the school stating that students who did not bring a “healthy lunch” would be offered the missing portions, which could result in a fee from the cafeteria, in her case $1.25.

“I don't feel that I should pay for a cafeteria lunch when I provide lunch for her from home,” the mother wrote in a complaint to her state representative, Republican G.L. Pridgen of Robeson County.

I am having a hard time with the idea of “food police” at schools- in fact this is something as a mom I would be pitching a fit about. Some parents do feed their children very bad diets, but I sure don’t want the government regulating that- and like other things the government gets into they are not feeding the children any better- I have seen some of the strange stuff they feed in cafeterias. YUK and doesn’t look nutritious to me either.

As a side note the sandwich had a serving of meat, dairy (if the cheese was real cheese), grains, banana and juice are both fruit- a whole banana for a small child is two servings. As another poster said children do need fat so chips are not be the best choice but with a balanced meal not bad enough to get excited about.

Sounds like they are drumming up business for the cafeteria and next they will be trying to coerce the parents into the free lunch program- schools scam extra money that way and want all the children on the free/reduced meal program these days. I did fight that one for years, refused to fill out the paperwork- told them it was none of their business how much money we made, we were not asking for anything...was a battle every year.

Here’s what I want to know. Where was the warrent to search the children’s lunch bags/boxes? If there was no warrent, then the search was illegal and the parent imposed fine (nugget tax) is unwarranted.

THey should find a lawyer and go to court.

Alternatively, it is a fine time to teach the children the art of civil disobebience. Tell the children to refuse to eat the Government supplied items!

Honestly, I am speechless that Americans even allow this.

Rome is burning, and all we do is vote that the fire should be put out.

What a bunch of mindless idiots this country has become. We certainly have the government we deserve.

We learned quite early on that the public schools were intent upon training children AWAY from their parents

I believe it was Woody Wilson who said the purpose of public education was to make a man as little like his father as was possible. Seems to me they are hard at work to accomplish their purpose

Who are the Nazi-types they hire to enforce this crap

Hell, that isn't even the question!!!!!!!

Who are the drooling halfwits who sit by and allow this?

We are very close to government run orphanages for children who have been taken by the feds so that they can be "properly" educated and cared for.

When I was in grade school, I was given a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, drink, and snack in my lunch most days by my mother. If my lunch had ever been “inspected” and I then had chicken nuggets forced on me, I absolutely would have thrown them on the floor in my refusal to eat them.

A lot of times, these products contain traces of peanuts.

Big story in Virginia recently of a little girl who died from an allergic reaction after a classmate gave her a peanut to eat. School didn't have a plan for such an emergency.

My daughter is allergic to strawberries. Not a deadly allergy, she has only had hives when exposed and we can have them in the house, she just cannot eat them.

Is this something else that has happened in the last couple of decades? I don't remember such food allergies when I grew up in the 60’s & 70’s. Probably something to do with all the chemicals in food these days.

Also, the damn hand sanitizer. I think it is good for kids to be exposed to germs, it builds resistance. You build up the resistance to certain germs when you are young and those germs don't bother you when you are older (and when it takes longer to shake off a bug).

WAKE UP!! You hate democrats? When was the last time you saw republicans actually do something to stop the direction of all of this?

Americans of both parties just lay down and accept whatever current insult is being imposed on them.

I'm with x1stcav, only it isn't the country that I am beginning to loathe; it is the people.

Am with you both, totally and completely. It is unbelievable.

When ours were in elementary school, they started telling us about questionnaires that were being distributed in the homeroom period, asking all kinds of personal questions. The kids would all get little toys or treats upon completing them. We immediately sat down with them and explained that not only did they NOT have to answer those questions, but further, that we did not want them to answer them, because their personal lives were NO ONE ELSE’S business.

We went to the teacher, and the principal, (I volunteered EVERY DAY in the school and was only a paycheck short of being an employee) and shared what we had been told, and then explained how we had instructed our kids to handle this situation in the future. We asked what was the reason for the “surveys”.... We were told that the answers provided “research information” for “organizations” that had received government grants to study various aspects of the children’s home lives! We pointed out that that was very likely an illegal act, since these were minors and no parental consent had been asked for or given. Cut to chase - that teacher stopped giving out “surveys”. In the future, other teachers did, but our kids used the paper to draw airplanes, dinosaurs and princesses, and eventually were old enough, and comfortable enough to just say no thank you, and continue on about their business.

Fast forward to freshman year college - DD has to take a “Health” class, aka sex ed. First week a speaker visits and passes around a basket filled with condoms, and tells everyone to take as many as they want, but at least one - “for a friend” if they were not going to use it themselves. You guessed it. DD just handed the basket back without taking any and in spite of a little verbal push and shove with the speaker, left the class that day without a condom for her “friend”.

What will it take for people to wake up and think for themselves?! I truly fear to imagine.

Strengthen our will Lord.
Tatt

What will it take for people to wake up and think for themselves?!

The complete removal of government involvement in education, The repeal of the 16th and 17th amendments, the prosecution of anyone taking government monies being allowed to vote and the dismantling of the Federal Reserve. But a majority of the people will need to wake up by themselves first in order for these things to happen.

Every day, I become more outraged and less hopeful.

I would rather have my kids at home in their jammies reading books every day than sitting in these brown shirt reeducation camps.

And honestly, the behavior of the children (and really the population in general), as well as the lack of concern by everyone involved, is appalling.

I took my kids out when my now 11 year old was in second grade. Am I concerned about socialization? Why yes, I don't want my kids hanging out around little gangsters and hookers and ne'er-do-wells, thankyouverymuch. :)

Candied bacon

Ingredients

12 slices bacon, about 1/4-inch thick
Finely ground black pepper
1/3 cup light brown sugar
Equipment: 2 baking sheets, preferably the same size

Directions

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Put bacon slices in a bowl, season them with pepper and toss with the brown sugar. Cover a baking sheet with parchment or foil and arrange the bacon in a single layer on top. Sprinkle any sugar left in the bowl over the bacon. Top with another layer of parchment or foil and top it, squarely, with another baking sheet. The baking sheet will flatten the bacon as it cooks.

Place the tray in the center of the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Check the bacon by lifting the top tray and parchment. If it is not golden brown and fairly crispy, resist the temptation to turn up the oven temperature, and cook it for 10 to 15 minutes longer. Check it again. Keep in mind that when you remove the tray and transfer the bacon to a serving platter or individual plates, the bacon will "crisp" up a little more. Be patient!

“I was given a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, drink, and snack in my lunch most days by my mother...”

Same here - but that was on a good day.

And always with a small mayonnaise bottle filled with milk(wax paper seal!)

Mashed potato sandwiches were not uncommon, but I left no lunch uneaten. Life is good.

What if the poor child had Celiac disease and the goo wrapped around that nugget would have made them vehemently sick? Sounds like this family has a nice tidy lawsuit they can file.
