Rasmussen Poll National (Santorum 39%, Romney 27%)
Rasmussen ^ | 2/15/12 | staff

Posted on 02/15/2012 9:30:10 AM PST by TexasFreeper2009

Follow the bouncing ball. Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum has now bounced to a 12-point lead over Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters finds Santorum with 39% support to the former Massachusetts governor’s 27%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich follows from a distance with 15% of the vote, and Texas Congressman Ron Paul runs last with 10%. Three percent (3%) like some other candidate in the race, and six percent (6%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Just over a week ago, it was Romney leading the pack with 34% after his win in the Florida Primary, followed by Gingrich 27%, Santorum 18% and Paul 11%. But then last week Santorum swept GOP caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota and a non-binding primary in Missouri as Gingrich continues to stumble in the race to be the conservative alternative to Romney.

Perhaps more tellingly, Santorum now trounces Romney 55% to 34% in a one-on-one matchup among likely GOP primary voters. This is the first time any challenger has led Romney nationally in a head-to-head match-up. Santorum also leads Romney head-to-head in Michigan.

Nationally, Romney still wins 47% to 38% paired against Gingrich and 47% to 42% running against only Paul.

This is the first time any challenger has led Romney nationally in a head-to-head match-up.

Meaning that Newt was *never* ahead of Romney in one of Rasmussen's national polls, not even after winning South Carolina. Newt may have some exceptional qualities but electability, particularly nationwide, is not one of them.

The sooner we realize this, the sooner we can support the best remaining candidate left.

Wow. Santorum is taking cotes from not only Newt, but Romney as well.

Agreed! Gingrich made terrible strategy errors in the way he went after Romney. He actually hit on the head in SC, but in FL went back to the populist anti-business stuff, and stupid stuff like pandering to hispanics.

He should have nailed Romney simply on his political record, and why he’s a weak candidate in November. I suppose that’s why this process works...it weeds out those with bad political instincts (Pawlenty and Huntsman), and those making bad tactical decisions (Gingrich and Bachmann).

Yes never surrender.

Santorum was at what 4%?

But Santorum kept going. And now he leads.

And Palin has a million times more charisma than Santorum. Palin would be so far ahead now.

Palin , Cain, Perry, Bachmann, all allowed the liberal mainstream media to push them out of this race. They should have kept going but they all quit because of the media. Never surrender.

I’m curious how Newt is so toxic to women but Bill Clinton was so loved? It’s obviously not just the cheating. Was it because Newt cheated multiple times or because of how he announced it to his previous wives.

I actually think Coulter’s defense of Romneycare really has hurt Romney with conservative voters. It opened people’s eyes to what people have to do to pull Romney over the finish line. They have to throw conservative principles aside and defend indefensible government statism in order to defend Romney’s record of big government and centralized control.

I really like Palin and would vote for her, but the truth is she has the same problem Gingrich has. Her negatives are too high.

I’m curious how Newt is so toxic to women but Bill Clinton was so loved?

1) Clinton's pro-abortion and welfare policies appealed more to single women and 2) Clinton was younger and had more sex appeal.

add Newts 15% to the 39% of Santorum and you get an absolute majority consensus forming around Santorum and against mittens of 54%

More. They actually ran that scenario: "Perhaps more tellingly, Santorum now trounces Romney 55% to 34% in a one-on-one matchup among likely GOP primary voters."

I didn't want Santorum to give up two weeks ago, and I don't want Newt to give up now.

It's probably still smart to have a backup option until we know what the impact the coming Romney slime campaign has on Santorum and until we know for sure how Santorum will play in southern states.

Palin made a big mistake...

...no she didn’t...she cooly and calmly calculated that she had no shot at winning the presidency and determined to stay with her family rather than run some quixotic campaign like Gingrich or Paul...

Yeah, I remember stories from out of the Carter WH when Reagan was the made the nominee. I don't recall the same celebrations the night of the General election.

I have a theory.

Remember all those early polls that had a “Generic Republican” beating Obama?

Maybe Santorum is generic. Kind of nondescript. Maybe a blank slate to most Americans.

Sarah Palin had less of chance than Santourm?

Palin is a million times more famous than Santorum.

And Sarah Palin has more charisma than any politician that I have seen.Santorum just seems like an average guy. Palin is very pretty also!

Does the GOP Congress surrender without a shot being fired when dealing with obama and the democrats. Bet the house payment on the Vichy elitist doing what the Vichy elitist do best, back stab and collaborate.
