A man reportedly suffered a heart attack while eating the “Triple Bypass Burger” on Saturday at a Las Vegas restaurant that serves “Bypass” burgers, “Flatliner” fries and free meals to people who weigh over 350 pounds.

An amateur video posted on Youtube shows the unidentified man being wheeled out of the downtown Heart Attack Grill restaurant on a stretcher after he collapsed in the restaurant that employees told KVVU-TV FOX5 looked like a heart attack.

Restaurant owner “Doctor” Jon Basso told the news station that he initially thought it was a joke when a waitress who told him a customer eating a Triple Bypass burger, which estimated to contain about 6,000 calories, was sweating and shaking.

That would be an interesting trial, because the evidence that saturated fat and cholesterol contribute to heart disease has been falling apart for decades. At the moment it's more of an old wive's tale than scientific fact.

Doublefacepalm.jpg

Do you seriously believe a diet high in both those items does not lead to heart disease?

You need to visit a good non biased nutrition site. One that is not pushing a fad diet.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas - possibly permanently.

This book explains a lot about what is wrong with our diets. It's not a diet book, instead a lifestyle book. I have made the change...

I have been going to a non-biased site: pubmed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/) where you can read the actual studies.

If you take the time to read the actual studies, you'll see that the focus shifted away from saturated fat to cholesterol decades ago. Now the focus has shifted to coronary inflammation, pattern-B LDL, and lp(a).

The original hypothesis form the 1950's that saturated fat was never proven, but the scientific community ran with it because the were confident it eventually would be proven true (it takes decades to run these studies). It never was proven true.

The same was true for cholesterol, because cholesterol can't be lowered strictly by diet (you liver makes 85% of your cholesterol normally, and has more than enough capacity to make 100% if you stop eating cholesterol entirely), so nobody has ever been able to run an actual study--without drugs--that shows lowering cholesterol reduced heart disease.

If you're still confident that cholesterol is behind heart disease, explain the results from this UCLA study:

http://www.ahjonline.com/article/S0002-8703(08)00717-5/fulltext

They looked at cholesterol levels of heart attack patients admitted to the hospital after a heart attack (the got hold of the data for 59% of all heart attack victims in the USA for a multi-year period). What did they find? The people with low cholesterol had 75% of the heart attacks--75%.

And, what percentage of heart attack victims had high cholesteral (both high HDL & high LDL)? 0.7%. That's less than 1%; that's only 7 out of 1,000; that's darn near zero.

The people that have high cholesterol are not the ones having the heart attacks. That's clear from this UCLA study.

From a Harvard study.

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/fats-full-story/

With headlines like “Saturated Fat is Not Your Heart’s Enemy,” and “NOT GUILTY: The Long-Standing Vilification of Saturated Fat Finally Turning to Vindication,”(23,24) some of the media and blog coverage of these studies would have you believe that scientists had given a green light to eating bacon, butter, and cheese. But that’s an oversimplified and erroneous interpretation. Read the study and subsequent studies more closely, and the message is more nuanced: Cutting back on saturated fat can be good for health if people replace saturated fat with good fats, especially, polyunsaturated fats. (16,25)  Eating good fats in place of saturated fat lowers the “bad” LDL cholesterol, and it improves the ratio of total cholesterol to “good” HDL cholesterol, lowering the risk of heart disease. Eating good fats in place of saturated fat can also help prevent insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes. (26)

"Can we get the low-fat proponents to apologize?"

Yes, people thought low fat diets were good but your body needs good fats such as polyunsatuarated.

You need good fats, not trans or saturated fats.

The heart attack combination that surprised me was a Monday morning coupled with constipation and “vagalling” down. EMTs have some “great” stories.

The protien to carb ration of the sandwich pictured is pretty good.

If the customer ate 25% of it and saved the remainder for other meals, did not have fries or sugary beverages or beer; would be doing themselves a service.

As for cholesterol, I’ve been on statins for 14 years. The more I read about cholesterol the more I think the focus should be on avoiding low HDL. Red wine and dark chocolate are now my friends and my HDL is 70+. Screw the statins, but I still take them. In fact, my doctor and I agreed to experiment dropping them a few years ago and my LDL did spike.

vasovagal syncope

I used to get that all the time back when I was really pushing myself hard training for long distance running. I never fully lost consciousness. It happened when I would stand up quickly. The dizziness would go away once I dropped to my knees. Sometimes my vision would go dim and my hearing would fade for a few seconds. I think it was because intensive long distance running drops your resting heart rate and your resting blood pressure to ridiculous low levels. My resting heart rate was 40 beats per minute and my resting blood pressure was about 110/48.

I had to google that. Wish I didn't. Read some EMT stories on the google link and one was a woman in the ER who left her tampon in for 3 months.

Glad I'm not in the medical field.
