Newt Gingrich visits the Hoover Institution

Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House and current Republican presidential primary candidate, visited the Hoover Institution on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, for a series of meetings with Hoover fellows to discuss a broad range of issues, from health care to current economic conditions in the United States and abroad to national security.

Gingrich asked for and received fellows’ assessments of the problems associated with these issues and the fellows’ suggestions for solutions. Among those participating in the meetings were Hoover Institution director John Raisian; former secretaries of state Condoleezza Rice and George Shultz; former members of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers Michael Boskin, Edward Lazear, and John Taylor; and retired chief of naval operations Admiral Gary Roughead. They were joined by fellows’ expert on the US budget, politics, education policy, legal constitutional issues, taxation, and international relations.

"Assuming you accept the characterization of Newt as formidable and brilliant, but uneven and possessing an erratic temperament, then whose conclusion—Dr. Sowell's or Dr. Rahe's—you're likely to favor comes down to your own risk attitude. The higher your propensity for risk in, say, your investment portfolio, the more likely you are to choose Gingrich as your candidate. But the more risk averse among us will err toward Romney, who's perceived to be the safer choice.

As for me—despite continuous findings that women are significantly more risk averse than men (which, come to think of it, could very well play a role in Gingrich's low favorability ratings among women)—I'm risk favorable, and I would tend to side with Thomas Sowell's conclusion."

Note how the mass media report the visit and neglect to mention all the named (and unnamed) fellows of Hoover Institution who met with Newt. If Dr. Sowell (who the major media most always makes sure to ignore) was at the meeting, he most likely enjoyed the time to exchange ideas.

Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, was already appointed a Hoover Institution Distinguished Visiting Fellow in 1999.

Thanks for posting. I think it quite likely Dr. Thomas Sowell was one of the fellows Newt Gingrich met with.

I want to go with the choice of high explosive, get er done, candidate whom leaves bodies on the political floor,
ohhh, how sweet rewards that would be and to have dramatic reform. It would be a new day in America. ( I love Dr. Sowell, thank God he is being a honest conservative in these confusing times)

Anyone who thinks Romney is the “safe choice” in this election is not a conservative. Newt is risky because he can flip flop on things like individual mandates, global warming, amnesty and propose massive government programs while calling for deficit reduction.

Correct. They are Republican Party functionaries whose livelihood depends on the Republican Party. Or, as Sarah Palin calls them, career politicians.

Newt is risky because he can flip flop on things like individual mandates, global warming, amnesty and propose massive government programs while calling for deficit reduction.

Many times what are considered flip-flops are simply brainstorming out loud. His picture with Nancy Pelosi was dumb but he only said he thought they could work together to come up with a solution. That does not mean he agreed with her on the issue. His solution may have been to wait and see what the results would be of doing nothing.

As President he would not be shooting from the hip. He would have many advisors to discuss things with and there is little he could accomplish without working with others. Remember how effective he was as Speaker when Bill Clinton was President. That is the kind of President he would be.

Regardless, I don't think there will be an election this year.
