As Ive been noting here, one key metric to determine whether the prolonged GOP nomination process is damaging Mitt Romneys general election prospects is his standing among independents, many of whom remain sour on Obamas economic performance.
Todays new Pew poll offers another installment. The topline is striking enough it finds that Rick Santorum is surging among Tea Partyers and conservatives, again suggesting that they just cant come to terms with Romney as the nominee.

I`m entertained by it too, but all the GOP candidates are shedding Indie support. That`s the problem.
LOL!!!
Good news for Romney haters. Bad news for the other two candidates. Those independents are going to go to obama. It’s a lose-lose situation for us at this point.
So, in many cases the term “independents” may not mean just the “mushy” middle anymore; and, hence, is being entirely misinterpreted and miscalculated by people like our “friend” Mr Rove and other GOP strategists.
...and, yes, I consider myself one of those disaffected Conservative “independents.”
Sarah Palin on FOX this morning saying if there is a brokered GOP convention she would not preclude the possibility of running if “tapped” to do so.
We shall see.

Not surprising the way the GOP is treating its Conservative base. You, above all, should realize that here in VA where the GOP rigged their primary so we can only vote for either Mitt or Ron Paul! There are lots of folks POed about that here in VA.
Bad as the Dems are; they've never totally disenfranchised me; but, the VA GOP did!!! ...and I take my right to vote for my candidate VERY seriously! I am not “buying” the GOP’s whole “rules are rules” BS as an explanation for keeping Newt and others off the primary ballot! ...especially since he GOP is flagrantly violating its own rules in FL in order to deny delegates to all the “non-Romney” candidates.
So, while I won't vote for a Dem; I AM angry enough at the GOP to vote for Ron Paul in the VA GOP primary just to deny delegates to Romney ...and I absolutely LOATH Ron Paul!) (Of course I won't vote for Paul in the General Election.)
Send the GOP-E a Message ...Protest Vote Ron Paul in the VA GOP Primary!!!
GO NEWT!!!
Amen. Republicans continue to destroy their own party; they just can't help themselves they hate Romney so much.
There is an urban myth out there that all independents are moderates.

I’ve been registered as an independent for some years now. Up until the 2010 elections I continued to donate to the Republican party because I wanted to see Republicans supported in elections with party funds. No more. I just throw their stuff away unopened and have been making the donations straight to my candidate(s) of choice. I don’t take their calls anymore either.
When someone asks me I’m not sure what to call myself. There is no “conservative” party.
I understand that a candidate has to appeal to many voters in order to win. I’m not convinced that a conserative candidate would be a losing proposition, even one more socially conservative than the mainstream as long as that candidate can make the voters understand that he/she will preserve their liberties and work for the good of the country.
Good news: this greatly reduces the chance that Mitt will be the nominee.
Bad news: It opens the door to a brokered convention and the Elites forcing a nominee on us who is even worse, without getting even Mitt’s level of scrutiny.
NOOOOOOOO!!!
I consider myself an “Independent Conservative” first at this point
Although I have voted Republican over the past 40+ years, over the past decade I have become more-and-more disenchanted w/the GOP. I am convinced that the GOP is more about elitist insiders maintaining and controlling their power than doing what is best for the Republic. Of course, the Dems are equally guilty of that charge; if not moreso, and have far worse policies.
At any rate, I will no longer blindly support GOP-E candidates just because they are endorsed by a cabal of Northeastern fiscal conservatives who are social liberals and who could care less about the Constitution or our God-given rights.
It appears that we are largely in agreement as to our definition and understanding of the political and philosophical journey upon which we have embarked.
Take care,
-Geoff
I know, it’s an ugly truth, but we have to steel ourselves for the worst. :-/

Ummm, NO. Obama has lost the Indies for well over a year now. His recent polices on abortion, budget, defense, etc will not make Indies come back to him. Any of the GOP candidates will not make them frock back to him.
Hussien is in a lot of trouble. He is has left-wing loon base of the DNC and is about it.
