Santorum Warns of Iran Attack on North Dakota
National Review ^ | 2/16/2012 | Charles C. W. Cooke

Rick Santorum made an odd comment in North Dakota on Wednesday. Praising the state for its energy production, he warned his audience that its success in the field might lead to terrorist attacks. CNN reports:

Rick Santorum warned a quiet North Dakota audience Wednesday that their state’s booming oil industry positioned the region as a prime target for terrorism.

“Folks, you’ve got energy here. They’re going to bother you

They've attacked in Brazil, India, Indonesia, and of course England, France, Spain, and oh yes, Central Texas on the largest population base we have. Why should North Dakota be unreachable?

North Dakota is also the site of one of our last 3 remaining ICBM fields. But, I don't expect all 3 to survive the Obama cuts in military forces and especially those in nuclear weapons.

One missile site is only a couple of miles from the Canadian border. The base, Minot, is about 42 miles from the border. You'll recall that several of the 9-11 hijackers came in from Canada. They could easily implant IEDs and/or ambush crews headed out to or back from the launch control facilities.

The only morons here are the shmucks who think jihadists will not target American energy production.

Let's think this one through. Suppose you are right, although even that's no better than even money, but if true, what target would an Iranian terrorist pick? A nuclear plant? An oil farm in Oklahoma with millions of gallons of petroleum in big tanks? A key installation in the national energy grid threatening to black out the entire east coast? an oilwell in North Dakota?

You be the judge.

Understand that rural areas are very vulnerable.

Except for the fact that rural areas also tend to be well armed.

The people on flight 93 knew what to do, but didn't have the necessary tools. They got 'er done anyway, albeit at a terrible price.

If not North Dakota, how bout Kansas?

Actually I think in the case of oil infrastructure, ecoweenies would be the most likely terrorists but it really doesn’t matter when things go boom.

Me thinks Rick is a little more informed of the 24Billion barrels of oil in the Bakken Shale than some are here...

It is our future, and, since Burlington SantaFe transports the oil for Buffet from it to Louisiana, I’d suspect it is important to Obama, too.

an oilwell in North Dakota

Why do you think the choices in ND are limited to individual wells?

The existing Keystone (not the XL expansion) is a 590,000 Barrel per day oil pipeline.

The Northern Border Pipeline can move 2 Billion cubic feet a day of Natural Gas across North Dakota to points South.

There are other terminals in inter-ties. North Dakota has become the 4th largest oil producer in the US.

He’s right. If Mustapha Bin Yomama wants to cause trouble, messing with the Bakken fields would get attention.

...it is the only new strategic source of petroleum in America

The only one, except for the Eagle Ford, Woodford, Niobrara, Monterey, Utica and all the others.

Bakken proved the technology first, but it is far from the oil shale formation.

If a party pushes something effectively it will be heard.

Great example right now. The Republicans are talking about the First Amendment and religious freedom, and the MSM is telling everyone they want to ban birth control and want all women to be barefoot and pregnant. That is the message getting out to the masses when they are watching Ophra or what ever junk they watch.

Understand. You are playing poker against a stacked deck.

The media is the propaganda arm of the Democrat party.

If we allow the election to swing on anything other than economics, we will lose. Just stay away from the other stuff. Please!!!

Exactly, El Gato. I was wondering if someone was going to mention the ICBM site in Minot. Given it’s know terrorists have entered through Canada (and the border is for all intents and purposes non-existent up there, given there’s a few thousand miles of virtually undefended border) — it’s a ‘low tech’ thing that a well trained cell could do.

Santorum did serve on the Senate Armed Services committee and presumably he had access to a few things the average freeper doesn’t.

Agree when it comes to the lone-wolf type of terrorist. But if you’ve got a state or AQ sponsored cell of terrorists who are following some sort of grand long term strategy, then I think I would strongly disagree.

Of course.. having a security mindset is truly bizarre. Just ignore the problem and it'll go away. Honest.
