(SCOTTSDALE, AZ) - An unarmed Arizona grandfather was blasted in the head this week by a police officer who killed the man because he "thought" he had a weapon. This was the particular officer's sixth fatal shooting in the line of duty, it happened Tuesday night in Scottsdale, "There were at least three officers in position to engage the suspect. At least one of the officers thought he saw something in the suspect's hands," Scottsdale Police Sgt. Mark Clark told Arizona's KPNX.

I will reserve judgment until more details are available.

The article indicated he was a member of the SWAT team on one of the shootings, and doesn’t say he no longer is.

Also, the article says that “at least one of the 3 officers” thought the man had a gun, but does not specifically say it was Peters.

Given those facts, it is possible that it was another cop who thought he saw a gun and Peters was ordered to shoot.

According to local reports, 50-year old John Loxas had his 9-month old grandchild in his arms as he walked around his neighborhood, apparently making threats toward ‘neighbors and police’

Did you notice that I was whacking the guy in Post #8, who was defending the shooting?

The article stated the cop “thought” the grandfather had a gun.
You said,”The man holding the baby was reaching for a gun.”
This was no where to be found in the article.
From your comments it seems you side with a murderous trigger happy LEO.
I find that disturbing.

I am disappointed on the posts I am seeing. I have read several other much more compete and less biased reports on this particular incident.

What was not mentioned here is that the guy who was shot was blind stinking drunk and had a revolver that he pointed at his neighbors and threatened to shoot them. They were cleaning up the garbage can that the drunk kicked into the street earlier and told them they were unhappy about that. That is why the police were called. In addition, there was a history of violence with the guy who was shot. There was also a loaded handgun and loaded shotgun just inside the door that he was going back in through.

I would rather have him dead than holding a baby and the loaded handgun (and shotgun) that they found just inside the door and later using the kid as a hostage.

And, NO, I am not a “police can do no wrong” kind of person. In this case I am not joining the call for this officers head. But go ahead and join the chorus based on a very biased news story if you want to.

Wow, the lefties read these edited stories and come running out from under their rocks to scream about the bad cop. Meanwhile, back in the real world...

According to the 911 call, the neighbors said Loxas was pushing his 9-month-old grandsonin a stroller and walked over and kicked a neighbor’s trash can into the street. When another neighbor went to pick it up, Loxas returned with the baby in his arms and started yelling, “You got a problem with that?” the caller tells the dispatcher. “The guy pulls out a gun, cocks it and aimed it at him.”

A search warrant recovered a loaded pistol “a few feet from where the suspect fell inside the residence,” Clark said. “It was wedged between the arm and cushion of a chair a few feet away from where he fell.” It is the same pistol believed to have been used to threaten neighbors, he said. A loaded shotgun also was found near a chair a few feet from the pistol, Clark said. In addition, police found at least eight “Airsoft” type rifles and pistols, as well as “a functional improvised explosive device,” he said.

Nice shooting, officer. Thank you for putting this dangerous scumbag down like the rabid dog that he was. I’m sure the neighbors are relieved to have this deadly threat removed from their neighborhood at last.

Oh, and by the way:

“In 2010, Scottsdale police were called to the house because Loxas was threatening neighbors with a pistol, police said. He has been arrested at least once, police said. The 911 caller told the dispatcher that this wasn’t the first time that Loxas had pointed a gun at neighbors.”

>>>No, not a trigger happy cop ... Sounds like a cold-blooded serial murderer who hides behind a badge.
<<<

Possibly. Or possibly, a cop, who as one of the best shots on the force, was assigned the role of sniper, to, if necessary, take out the man making the threats, without harming the baby (as he had done in a prior hostage situation, earning a medal). It is entirely possible that a different officer thought he saw a gun and ordered Peters to shoot.

The reporter obviously has an agenda and is obviously an idiot, as he described how in 2002 the officer killed a man in his only NON-fatal shooting? Huh?

The officer might be a murderer, trigger happy, or an outstanding professional, who efficiently executed an order from another officer, that turned out to be a tragically bad one.

I say wait until the details come out before we decide.

Funny how the reporter says the officer has a “shoot first ask questions later” attitude, when that seems to be his style of reporting. Why wait for the facts? Let’s just assume the officer is evil and crucify him.

The man holding the baby was reaching for a gun.

Other reports are saying he had no gun, there were guns in his home.

Anybody else find this article to be amateurishly written? Odd phrasing and editorializing.

Yes. Terrible reporting, terribly written. All of it. The victim is identified alternatively as Mr. Roxas, Mr. Rozas and Mr. Roax! Did you catch "writer, editor" Mr. King's glamour shot and lengthy, award-rich bio at the end of the report?

Sounds as though the child was being held hostage or used as a human shield, or that was the LEOs’ perception of the situation. The child is safe, so I’ll withhold opinion until I get more info.
