Someone should take a photo of the garbage cans after lunch period.

I was once stranded for a day in York, NE.

Nice little town. Nice people.

teriyaki blasters?????

I object to any food called a "blaster"; that cannot end well.

Probably, when you were in school, the food was made from scratch by local lunch ladies. I loved our school food - meatloaf, mashed potatoes, etc.... now it is all prepared, frozen and just heated by the lunch ladies. Most of it tastes like a cheap tv dinner. Nothing is really fried, just heated in the oven so limp baked “french fries”, soggy baked chicken nuggets. One of my “favorites” when my son was in school was a roasted potato wedge.... it had nothing on it for seasoning because salt is bad you know. So kindergartners were given this hunk of roasted potato and it went straight into the trash most of the time.

I've seen them. It's amazing how much food is dumped. The custodian never slows down taking it out during the lunch period.

Our lunch ladies were country mamas who knew how to cook real food. None of this premade fake junk. OMG, the smell of baking homemade yeast rolls drifted all through the hallways!!! The lemon pepper or fried chicken was a real piece of chicken with a bone, meat and skin not some ground up mess. At our school today, they'll serve a baked potato with a butter sauce. Sure, the kids like it because it has a ton of sugar added to the sauce. One day, I asked what was in the sauce and the ladies just looked at me like huh? because it was premade but one finally mumbled it was only butter. Yeah, I just fell off the turnip truck. That was about the same duh? response I got out of them when I asked what was in the hamburger patties that was making my kid upchuck every time it was served. But it's 100% pure beef!!! Sure, there goes that turnip truck again.

Yes our public school was the same way when I was growing up. And the “free” lunch was homemade soup. If you didn’t have money for a plate lunch you got soup. It was a good veggie and beef soup that didn’t cost much. It is sad what has happened to the foods offered these days. So much gets thrown away, even unopened milk cartons. It is illegal to give it away.

Well of course! A potato might be rich in nutrients, but it has next to no flavor on its own. Kids (and for that matter, quite a few adults) aren’t going to eat flavorless food no matter how good it is for them.

Everyone gets free breakfast here and they make the kids take a milk and a juice. Of course, one or the other or both gets dumped unopened. What a waste. I used to help with the spec ed kids so sat with them as they arrived and through breakfast. We’d take anything that was unopened back to the room for snacks or would save it for use in their cooking lessons. There’s a new teacher there now who can’t be bothered with such so no snacks at the end of the day when some might not be getting supper. Oh, well.

Flat country and pretty dreary looking when we overnighted there a couple of years ago...but you’re right about the nice people; the motel folks were super and the little Chinese restaurant nearby was a great surprise.

Exactly. Plus, since they are most worried about the kids who are not getting proper nutrition at home, they are competing with the fried fast food menus that a lot of those kids eat constantly. No way steamed broccoli or an unseasoned roasted potato is going to taste good to kids who have been raised on McDonalds and pizza hut. Most of the school food goes into the trash

Isn’t that a shame? When we were kids you paid for each item individually (or the plate lunch then each dessert and milk) so you got what you wanted and didn’t waste it because you had paid for it. Now they have to take everything and more than half the kids are getting it for free and don’t care what gets wasted.

Remember, these are semi-skilled, Midwestern line cooks who are cooking these dishes. This won’t taste like the stuff you get at the local Houlihan’s.
