I've been sitting on this piece for a bit- but after the Romney hit pieces on Newt in the WashPo, WashTimes and Townhall- this article seems appropriate.
I know Matthews is merely stirring the pot-- but he's right on this one, nonetheless.
I think Newt is staying in the race to win, but failing that, I think he wants to make certain that Romney and the GOP-E lose.
Beat 'em, Newt.

I actually think that the primary has gotten very personal to Romney. I think he absolutely HATES Newt and just wants to destroy his reputation and chances for anything. One thing I agree about with the Newt supporters is why Romney continues going after Newt. I don't agree with “Romney is afraid of him”. I think it is some sort of weird vendetta. Maybe he is still pissed that Newt did not call him after Florida. I don't know but it is REALLY weird that Romney spews such hatred towards Newt. I mean this is politics after all. Romney I truly believe is the only one who is taking this personally. It is really just weird. Oh sorry Newt Supporters, I don't believe for one minute that Santorum and Romney have some sort of secret handshake going on. However, I do think that Romney does not HATE Santorum but has a deep deep hatred for Newt for some reason.

I think that Romney is finding that he won a Pyrrhic victory in Florida. To people for whom character matters, the way that Romney is comporting himself is turning off voters to him.
His scorched earth strategy may have burned him the most.p. People don't want a president whom they see to be mean. They want a president who is uplifting.
Obama has a mean streak in him, and it's now showing in Romney, too.
Gingrich has to stay uplifting, while showing Romney to be just plain mean and vindictive.

“And liberals, believe it or not, are rooting for the Newt.”
Of course they are; Newt’s chances of winning against Obama are nil. Grumpy, chubby, white guy preaching responsibility vs. slick, jive-talkin’ black dude promising everything... they’d love Newt as our candidate.

Always remember that Chris Matthews was successfully replaced by an orange traffic cone.
