New Romney strategy in Michigan: Try to Trump Santorum
Hot Air ^ | 2/20/2012 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 02/20/2012 9:58:51 AM PST by Lakeshark

What’s the prescription for a famously brilliant venture capitalist who has trouble connecting with blue-collar voters in his native state? How about bringing in a far more controversial venture capitalist who’s claim to recent fame is in firing people on national television? What could go wrong?

With just over a week to go before Michigan voters head to the polls, Mitt Romney is enlisting the help of one of his highest-wattage surrogates: Donald Trump. The real estate mogul is preparing to spread his pro-Romney, anti-Rick Santorum message in a series of radio interviews this week on local stations from Traverse City to Detroit. …
**snip**
Now the Romney camp is explicitly linking itself to Trump, and in the strangest place imaginable. The auto bailouts aren’t as popular in Michigan as some would like to think, but neither is Wall Street. Romney has spent the last week emphasizing his roots in Michigan, with some limited success, but still finds the blue-collar vote elusive. Sticking Donald Trump in the forefront as his surrogate isn’t going to help Romney connect with those voters, and it’s likely to help Santorum strengthen his lock on that vote. **snip** If this is a preview of the kind of strategy we’d see in a general election from Team Romney, then perhaps the electability issue is more open than some would think.

As a Michigan voter, why the hell would I care what Donald Trump has to say? I wasn’t going to vote for him anyway.

Trump used to make intelligent criticisms of Obama and the Democrats. Shortly after joining the Romney team Trump is making dishonest attacks on conservatives.

I hear a fair amount of Romney's negative ads on the radio, I presume he's putting them on TV as well (I don't watch), it's going to make it close.

Romney is trying to take out his opponents because he can't run on his record.

I have my doubts that the unions are all going to cross over to vote for Santorum. Right off the top it removes their chance to vote in any democrat primaries to do so. (They get either a republican or democrat ballot with no crossovers) The unions crossed over and voted for Snyder in 2010 and feel like they got burned when he actually won. Not to mention the huge sums of money the unions spent losing big time.

We’ve also got a fast growing conservative union movement growing in the state led by Terry Bowman who actually testified against the use of union dues going to candidates on capitol hill last week. Bowman is also pushing for right to work in Michigan.

Is that because they view Santorum as more pro-union than Romney? Or is it because the think Santorum will be easier to beat in the general? I think Santorum will be a lot tougher for Obama to beat in the general than Romney.

Romney must have a plan to return the housing market to it’s days of sub-prime mortgages and let anybody and everybody buy property for a song.

It’ll crash again, even harder, but not before The Donald can unload everything he’s got at premium prices.

I guess ‘standing up to China’ and ‘getting tough with the ME oil producers’ and ‘regaining the respect we lost around the world’ doesn’t matter anymore, eh Donald?

Thanks Donald, and don’t forget to get that silk red, white, and blue tie dry cleaned.

I think it's more Santorum being less anti-union than Romney who is view in the mold of a Rick Snyder. Snyder is a RINO on many things, but not unions. Santorum's not their friend, but won't go out of his way like a Wall Street type will.

Romney is Joe Isuzu and Gordon Gekko and will be with them 0% of the time. Santorum's a Pittsburgh area politician who may work with them 25% of the time.

Only know what sis is telling me after talking with the kids that work management in factory jobs.

Have no idea what their motive is but Romney does not appear to be well liked.

Openly ridiculed.....

There’s no democrat primary this year though. Obama has a caucus this year. This doesn’t effect August primaries either.

They got what they deserved with Snyder. Too bad I’m paying for it too.

Whatever happened to The Bouffanted One’s search for Obama’s birth records? Until The Donald can come up with a valid, non-partisan-expert-certified Obama birth certificate, he has no credibility to make any statements about anything. He should go plant himself in his beloved penthouse and let the good people of the Midwest get back to their plows.

I don't work in a factory, but most of my family does or did. Politically, they are split with R's, D's, and I's. None of them like Romney. Some (mostly R's) voted for Romney in 08 because of McCain. None are this time. The more people know of Romney, the less they like.

I think most are going Santorum. They don't love him, but they can accept him.

My guess is that Mitt’s team is going to simply play the odds and try to wear out the competition with money everywhere he can. With (mostly) proportional delegate distribution and Santorum and Newt splitting up the Midwest and the South it’s a reasonable strategy. Paul also mixes things up. Mitt can afford huge dollars per delegate won compared to the others.

Sadly, If Mitt goes to the convention with the most delegates (though not enough to win outright) deals will probably be made to get him the nomination. Just my guess.
