Russia needs to launch a major military buildup to prepare for life in a dangerous world where international law is breaking down, the West feels free to intervene in sovereign countries, and rivals could invade Russia to seize its rich trove of natural resources, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has warned.
In his fifth programmatic article detailing what he will do if he wins a new six-year presidential term in elections that are now less than two weeks off, Mr. Putin pledged, among other things, the biggest rearmament program in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Over the next decade, Putin writes, $772 billion to be spent on 400 new intercontinental ballistic missiles, 2,300 late-generation tanks, 600 modern combat aircraft – including at least 100 military-purpose space planes – eight nuclear ballistic missile submarines, 50 surface warships as well as a whole new inventory of artillery, air defense systems, and about 17,000 new military vehicles.
"The processes of global transformation currently underway may carry all sorts of risks with them, many of them unpredictable," Putin wrote Monday in the government-owned Rossiskaya Gazeta. "In a situation of global economic and other kinds of hardships, it may be very tempting for some to resolve their problems at others’ expense, through pressure and coercion…. It is no wonder that we already hear some voices saying that it is 'only natural' that resources of global significance should soon be declared as being above national sovereignty.… We must exclude any such possibility, even a hypothetical one, with respect to Russia. This means that we should not tempt anybody with our weakness."

What’s to fear? All the western countries are reducing the size and scope of their military establishments.
Now the Chinese OTOH, aren’t. They are modernizing and increasing their Naval and Air forces. They have cut back on the size of their army to something they can actually use. Before they had lots of troops, but no way to move many of them. Now they have better transport and fewer troops to move. But still lots of troops. Russia is depopulating, so is China, but they are somewhat behind the curve compared to the Russian. Sibera is so close and so empty as to pose a very tempting morsel for the Chinese. They may come to an accomodation, Land for Peace, with Russian retaining “access” to the Chinese developed resources. Or they may not.

The SS-27 is a threat to our security. It is claimed to be capable of making evasive maneuvers to avoid a kill by terminal phase interceptors, and carries targeting countermeasures and decoys. It is shielded against radiation, EMP, nuclear explosions at distances over 500 meters, and is designed to survive a hit from any laser technology
You also add to the equation where is Vladimir going to get the technology for these weapons.
And if we have only three hundred nukes, with MIRV platforms on missiles, multiple missiles in each silo complex or submarine, we will be putting too many eggs in one basket, so to speak. It’s not as effective a deterrent as it would be with all those nukes spread out — or as survivable in a first strike.
There is Malmstrom Air Force Base(which I will be visiting in September.My clearance has “cleared”)which can kill about 20 million people and level most of the Russian armed forces.Multiply that by 3 ICBM bases(FE Warren,Grand Forks,and Minot) and the bombers carrying cruise missiles The LCC commanders can get all these missiles out within 60 seconds. This is interesting because they have competition between the bases who can fire the missile the fastest and they are given various awards.The Tridents are designed for a second strike,which have the MIRV warheads and hit Russian cities.
Why don’t they just change his name to Vladimir Pupin’ and be done with it.
There’s about as much chance of the West invading Russia, as there is Obama will turn into a loyal U. S. citizen.
In 1987 there were 30 forward deployed Soviet divisions in Eastern Europe to spearhead this assault, with a further 94 in Western Russia to rapidly reinforce it. Such was the fear and planning that went into this imagined future battle, that in the West, the mere act of reinforcing the spearhead was considered to be an overt prelude to war. Many unnerving international crises were generated by both illusions and realities of this feared reinforcement.

Russia had been invaded previously, so I guess they had some reason to think of it taking place again.
We’ve had the upper military hand since the fall of the Soviet Union. We haven’t tried to take advantage of it with regard to Russia proper.

I agree. I still do not see them moving it from the continent except for Turkey. Turkey has too much access to those weapons there.
