After the burqa, French take objection to halal meat

Paris : A TV documentary’s revelation that slaughterhouses around Paris have switched meat production entirely to halal methods has stirred a political storm in France, where attitudes to Europe’s largest Muslim minority are a subtext in a presidential election campaign.

The France 2 documentary last week said all of the abattoirs in the greater Paris region were producing only halal-style meat, selling some without labelling it as such to avoid the cost of running separate lines for halal and non-halal customers.

Far-right candidate Marine Le Pen – who is hoping to win voters away from centre-right President Nicolas Sarkozy ahead of the two-round election in April and May – has seized on the issue.

“All the abattoirs of the Paris region have succumbed to the rules of a minority. We have reason to be disgusted,” Le Pen told a rally in Lille on Saturday, pledging to file a legal complaint.

In a country known for its obsession with the provenance of its cuisine, the issue could play with a wider audience than the far right, including animal rights groups, consumer advocates and food industry professionals.

Some European animal rights campaigners say that the Islamic halal and Jewish kosher rules for ritual slaughter are less humane than standard European practice, because they ban the practice of stunning animals before they are killed.

“This polemic requires us to call for more transparency,” Frederic Freund, director of a group called Aid to Animals in Abattoirs (OABA), told RTL radio during a call-in programme.

Halal meat, slaughtered according to Islamic norms, is a booming market in France and growing demand for it on school, hospital and company canteen menus has already caused tension and misundersta

How interesting. After nearly a century of being labeled surrender monkeys, the French of all nations, are the only ones standing up to the biggest threat of the new millinuim. I see them in a much different light....

I’m all for banning the burqa, but I’m afraid this is going to snowball into discrimination against any religion soon enough.

No, "Far-right" candidate Marine Le Pen is standing up to them. The French Establishment doesn't care.

Le Pen is pro-market, anti-immigration, anti-welfare-state. Naturally, the Left despises her and smears her at any opportunity.

Marine Le Pen is also pro-Israel, which really drives the French Establishment crazy.

You sure she is pro-free market. I remember her father was the typical European statist in his economic views. As I remember he was quite Anti-American too.

Post 9/11 you would have to be delusional to think that food marked ‘halal’ hadn’t been tampered with...repeatedly.

Well her father certainly wasn’t!

My adult daughter does not share all my political views either. Your point?

My two points are:

1) that SHE runs the National Front party now, not her father, and

2) that if France continues with its Islamization, that it will be increasingly anti-Israel and anti-Jewish.

Marine le Pen is the ONLY French politician whose policies are long-term pro-Israel.

Marine Le Pen is pro-life and anti-euthanasia. As for her other positions, she seems a bit populist, but is likely to be as conservative (as we in the US understand the term) as any french politician we are likely to see. Check her wiki page for more.

I cannot understand why anyone would be against halal or Kosher foods.

As you describe the killing process, it’s indisputable that it is not as humane as stunning the animal before all that takes place.
