Santorum at Ave Maria - a small voice resonates

It’s normal to wonder if anyone is paying attention. As humans, our lives don’t seem to have meaning absent our communications and interactions with others. And as Christians, the influence our own lives has on others is of great import; our salvation in some way depends on whether we are channels for and bearers of His love. This goal is summed up in the lyrics of the alma mater song for Ave Maria’s law school, the Ave Maria project (in its many forms) serves as a “beacon in darkness, voice for all to hear.” Of course we typically toil away hoping that our small lives will somehow change the world for the better – will change the world for Christ. How wonderful that the nation is now hearing our small voice as amplified by the swirl of current events. May that small voice resonate far and wide in the words of candidate Rick Santorum while addressing Ave Maria University, and in the words of AMU President Jim Towey as he announced that AMU is suing the Obama administration for violating first amendment religious freedoms.

Rick Santorum was speaking at a religious non-political event about his personal convictions, not about what his governmental policies would be. The attacks on his speech, as well as the attacks upon his personal views about contraception, is an attempt to proclaim that people of traditional Christian belief should not be allowed to participate in the political process or public discourse.

Those who proclaim that they are shocked by these candid displays of private Christian belief should be held accountable for their anti-Christian bigotry.

Rick's speech may have been in private and may constitute his personal views only. However, they have now become public and he is a presidential candidate. When asked about these comments, Mr. Santorum did not back off. This apparently includes his comments about “mainline” Protestants, a denomination to which I belong. Frankly, he should help to further clean up his own church before pointing fingers at others. He comes off as being,at best, intolerant in the Ave Maria speech.

To further clarify, I actually voted for Mr. Santorum in my state’s primary. However, had I known about his speech at Ava Maria beforehand, I would not have.
