BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A 2-year-old boy who was rushed to the hospital after being found floating in a pool has died.
Bakersfield police officers were sent to a home at about 3 p.m. Monday in the 2300 block of Sherwood Avenue regarding a baby in the pool not breathing.

The pool had no gate around it. There were alarms on the doors, but the doors were left open due to the nice weather, DeGeare said.
It is unknown how long the baby was in the pool.

The son of famed comedian Lou Costello died that way. Tragic, and the repercussions go on in the family for the rest of their lives.

Some of my neighbor’s have pools. They told me in order to get home owner’s insurance, they had to first put up a six foot fence around the pool and it had to be secured with a lock. I guess it prevents tragedies like this and if neighbor kid’s decide to swim (and the owner doesn’t know about it).
Yep, it’s a shame, and it changes a family forever.
When I was a kid there were stories like this seemingly every week during the summer (that and kids suffocating in junked refrigerators during games of hide and seek before they stopped building them with latches). People are more careful these days but tragedies are still going to occur. It only takes a moment of inattention for a parent’s worst nightmare and a lifetime of grief.
