Running mates? Santorum campaign says Mitt Romney 'has done deal with Ron Paul'

By Toby Harnden

Last updated at 9:05 AM on 23rd February 2012

After Wednesday's GOP debate, in which Ron Paul and Mitt Romney repeatedly attacked Rick Santorum over his 16-year record in Congress, the former Pennsylvania hinted that something nefarious was going on.

'You have to ask Congressman Paul and Governor Romney what they've got going together,' Santorum told reporters in the spin room in Mesa, Arizona. 'Their commercials look a lot alike and so do their attacks.'

Santorum's top strategist John Brabender went even further, charging that the two men had "joined forces" and were coordinating attacks against his man.

It actually makes some sense for now. If Mitt can’t get the conservatives, maybe he can get the nuts.

Saint Rick is way off on this. I wish he had prepared more for the debate instead of complaining of a conspiracy that does not exist. I still plan to vote for him, but he is making it difficult to do and may be out of the race before I can vote for him.

They sure seemed intent on keeping Santorum down last night...on the face of it, Ron Paul should be a lot more opposed to Willard Romney than Santorum, but that didn’t appear to be the case last night.

Just a distraction by Team Romney. Chris Christie will be Mittens’ running mate.

While I seriously doubt Paul would be a running mate (who picks the 75 year old guy as VP?). it is actually an intriguing alignment politically. As much as I trash Romney, it may be a very smart move. If the anti-Obama movement and the Ron Paul brigade is combined, that is a clear electoral winner. The Ron Paul base will splinter after he is done...some will still vote for the Republican, and some might even go Dem...but many will sit home on election day.

I can see that. Mitt’s attitude towards the base is “screw you! you aren’t voting for me. I’ll win without you and then I’llscrew you into the turf from the White House”.

If Mitt is “courting” Paul, it’s that he wants Paul to lay off of him in VA.

I’ve always asked why Ron Paul seems to give Romney a total pass on everything. He never attacks or questions him. Maybe Romney and him have some kind of deal, I don’t know if it’s for the VP slot though.

Maybe it was just coincidence that Paul didn’t go after Romney.

Maybe Paul is unaware of the fact that Romney has a long established record of opposing the conservative and Constitutional principles that Paul claims to support consistently.

Maybe Paul forgot to go after Romney.

Maybe Paul just likes Romney, all politics aside.

Maybe Paul hasn’t gone after Romney in the past, and he just wants to be consistent.

Come on Rick...you're leading in severaal polls (and I believe deservedly), but this is just sour grapes. Man up. They are coming after you because you have been doing well. Simple as that. No plots.

I do not believe for an instant that Romney will have Paul as his running mate should he win the nomination. Much more likely to offer it to someone like Rubio to try and solidify his weakness amongst conservatives.

If Santorum thinks Paul’s commercials against him look too much like Romney’s, does that mean Santorum will pick Obama as his running mate? Their commercials look the same against Mitt.

Exactly why I said it makes sense “for now”.

In fact, putting on my tin foil hat I wonder if the democrats aren’t playing along.

I’ve read in other sources that Mitt and Paul are close friends, so, a coordinated attack might not be too far fetched.

Team Santorum need to tread lightly when making such allegations.

Bachmann had problems by making allegations against Team Perry, etc., and she couldn’t back them up.

If Team Santorum has proof, show it. Otherwise, shut up.

With Christie as Romney’s VP pick and hatchet man, I’m really trying to understand what Team Romney has promised Ron Paul.

Treasury secretary would be my guess.

Honestly its the only position I would consider Paul for but I doubt Romney would have any real plan to follow through.

We were watching, and I noticed Paul was not attacking Romney at all. I pointed it out to my wife, and in the end, she thought it was true: Paul was clearly in the Romney camp for some reason.

Paul teamed up in Iowa with Mitt to take out Newt, and is doubling down with the same strategy to take out Santorum.

He may be nuts, but he's got enough dumbies on his side to win this thing for the Mittster.
