Gun-rights groups decry proposed surtax on Illinois ammo sales

An Illinois lawmaker wants gun owners to shell out extra taxes in order to finance a new grant program for trauma centers, a move firearms advocacy groups say amounts to a "sin tax" on law-abiding hunters and target shooters.

State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, in a bill introduced earlier this month, proposed a 2 percent surtax on ammunition. The proceeds would go toward a "high-crime trauma center grant fund," which would then send the tax money to trauma centers in "high-crime areas."

The idea is to begin to offset the high cost of gun violence. Mark Walsh, campaign director for the Illinois Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, told FoxNews.com that cost often ends up being shouldered by these urban trauma centers.

"(The money would go) into communities here in Illinois that have been damaged with gun violence," he said. "I think it's a legitimate way to pursue funding."

But Richard Pearson, director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, said the bill effectively saddles gun owners -- hunters, target shooters and those who own firearms for self defense -- as a whole with the cost of gang violence in high-crime areas like Chicago.

I have the obvious solution.

Only charge blacks the additional tax on ammo.

Buy all my ammo on the internet. The first company that would collect this tax loses my business, period.

They should simply make the people who will use this service to pay for it.

Chicago should implement a 1% surcharge on its sales tax within the city.

Why not nail the source of the problem...the gangs. If they or their families have any access to government largess, drop them for life. Let that money go to funding the trauma centers. Put their criminal asses in work camps or make them room temperature so they don't repeat the crimes.

City of Chicago Sales Tax is already the highest in the nation (10.5%). Retail sales on the Mag-Mile have suffered because of it; especially from tourists.

Not an unexpected proposal at all from a far lefty like Cassidy. She was a big wheel in NOW for a time, and has championed just about every left wing agenda a state legislator could endorse.

Easy, buy ammo from neighboring states or off the Internet. Cheaper Than Dirt is a great company. I wouldn't let the state even know I had one round in my possession.

Hasn’t been a murder in over 30 years in our community, come warm weather everybody has guns on their person for bear protection. Other than Indians, nearest minority is 200 miles away. I see the correlation.

I suggest that only Chicagoans be charged that tax on ammo sales within Chicago. Of course, you can’t buy ammo in Chicago as there are no gun stores, but at least that places the burden on the people who will benefit.
