Texas A&M students petition for affirmative action for athletic teams
Campus Reform ^

Texas A&M recently reaffirmed their commitment to affirmative action.

University President, Dr. Loftin, wrote a letter to the campus community explaining that "the university has developed an affirmative action program" dedicated to increasing the amount of minorities at the school and has established an "annual placement goal" at the university.

To highlight the absurdity of affirmative action policies, conservative students at Texas A&M circulated a satirical petition around campus.

The conservative students asked their liberal peers, who were in favor of race-based preferences, if they would also be in favor of applying such policies to the school's athletic teams.

I guess the acceptance policy should just be show for classes. If everyone that applies is automatically accepted then theoretically there are no losers. Isn’t the argument about AA for entrance to the university or programs within the university?

Remember the entrance requirements are a screening program to ensure the students admitted will be successful and be high performers. This is a selling point for universities as they all “compete” for the best students (successful students contribute as alumni). Academia is a very competitive world and student professional placement and success is just as competitive with appropriate bragging rights as a sports championship.

There is no difference just different trophies and fans. Great Job Students.

As an Aggie, I miss the old Southwest Conference. I don’t think we should have left the Big 12.

I will miss playing Texas. My dad and older brothers were Aggies before me, and our Thanksgivings always centered around that game.

Are not spots at the best educational institutions finite?

Shouldn’t they be determined by merit.

Wouldn’t success for the winners mean failure for the losers here as well?

First no bonfire, then no TU game.

They’ll need to make an addition to the Campusology book:

“What does ‘Saw Varsity’s horns off’ refer to in the Aggie War Hymn?”

So..why are all these colleges graduating all these students with advanced degrees in "World Religions", Black Studies", "Humanities", "Modern Dance", and such...if professional placement and success are so important?

At least A&M does have automatic admittance for high academics. We live in California, and my son was just admitted because he is in the top quarter of his class and he scored over a 30 on his ACT.
