Obama Defends His Energy Policy in Florida Speech, After Coming Under Attack for High Gas Prices

In a blistering election year attack on his political foes, President Barack Obama charged Thursday that Republicans are "licking their chops" over painfully high gas prices that threaten the fragile economic recovery.

"Only in politics do people root for bad news and they greet bad news so enthusiastically," he said in a combative speech at the University of Miami. "You pay more, and they're licking their chops."

The defiant rhetoric came after days in which the White House has worked to get off the defensive over high gasoline prices, insisting that Obama has done everything he can to bring those costs down. The administration blamed sticker shock at the pump on unrest in the Middle East, speculative trading, and hightened demand in China, Brazil, and India.

Obama assured Americans that he feels their pain, saying the rise in gas prices "hurts everybody" and "means you've got to find even more room in a budget that was already tight."

In 2008 Obama was running around blaming republicans for the horribly high gas prices ($1.80), claiming that gas price was the most critical thing in the USA.

He wasn't the only one -- check this out from a 2007 Pelosi presser: http://www.youtube.com/embed/6X7z0zlPYy4

We have to make him feel the pain at the ballot box in November.

The RATS are whistling past the graveyard that the TEA party just up and moved to Machu Picchu or such since Nov. 10.

It will be a steamroll they’ll be crying about for decades.

the republicans need to throw the chu and skyrocket quotes back at him immediately and often and say ‘sorry, Mr president, it is your side calling for higher prices, prices that are going up because of your policies. and your plan to tap the SPR for political expediency is another failed policy. The answer is simple - get out of the way and stop trying to prevent americans from solving this man-made disaster the way they always have, with guts, vision, and the promise of keeping the hard-earned results of their efforts’

This is from the same people who cheered with every death in Iraq.

Well, I don't know if they openly cheered with every death in Iraq (that would have been harmful politically to them), but I seem to recall their mainstream media giving a lot of attention to the individual servicemen's deaths, especially during 2008.

I recall in particular PBS, which would put up a sequence of the recently departeds' mug shots in silence at the end of every nightly newscast during the Bush administration.

If there isn’t a Republican or Republican operative on the TV, radio, news, print, town hall, every hour on the hour beating this drum —then they really are on the same team. Gas prices brought Bush down and they can do the same to Ozero but NOT if we let them rewrite history and the present.

Excellent point. Seems as if gas prices and energy policy have been underemphasized during the GOP primary campaign, perhaps because the candidates are fairly close to each other on this or because gas prices haven't quite reached the record highs of the Bush years yet. But Obama trying to go on the offensive now may well backfire on him.

You mean, George W. Bush would still be President if gas hadn’t spiked in 2008? They might have brought Sarah/McCain in, but for the credit collapse that the latter was incapable of utilizing for his bid.
