DOROTHY RABINOWITZ
These have been good days for Rick Santorum, buoyed as he campaigns by conservative Republicans cheering their newly anointed hope. Still, it will occur to at least some of his supporters that their hope is destined to be short-lived, that their candidate's particular baggage would sink any presidential candidacy. Especially his.
It's not only that a certain body of Santorum pronouncements on social issues exists, and that they're of a sort that large sectors of the American electorate find unpalatable, to put it mildly. Or that he continues to add to them.
By the time Democratic researchers apply themselves to this compendium of Mr. Santorum's viewsin the unlikely event that he becomes the Republican nomineeit's size will have doubled, at the least. The Republicans have already provided President Obama with high-value gifts this election year, but none nearly as delectable as the prospect of a run against Mr. Santorum.

Not really true. The DNC has put out ads bashing Romney and sent out their surrogates like Debbie Was-a-man to bash him on talk shows. The media has reported on his Bain Capital background, his gaffes about bashing the poor, his tax returns, etc. Salon reported on some of the weird Mormon theories and on him paying off others for endorsements. The only media that’s been bashing all the candidates except for Romney is the mainstream “conservative” media like Drudge, Coulter, National Review, a lot of FOX, Bennett, Medved, Hewitt, etc.
LOL, sure they are! !
Dorothy Rabinowitz is definitely not just an economic conservative. She talks about social/cultural issues on the FOX WSJ show and at least at one point she was praising Newt heavily. She perhaps correctly realizes that Santorum is a lightweight who will not be able to stand up to or deal with the criticism leveled against him, as he showed in the last debate.
Frankly, when the Presidential election rolls around, we probably will have $5 -$6 dollar a gallon gasoline, and a war with Iran.
I think a ham sandwich could beat Obama, the Kenyan.
EXACTLT!!!!!!!
I will vote for the Republican nominee, regardless. No matter how bad, he would beat another 4 years of Bambi Hussein.
That being said, I can be very unhappy about it, and will do my best to ensure that the Rs nnominate a conservative. Then, let's see who has the bigger base, and the bigger turnout.
Also, last week on the FOX WSJ show, most of the panel was defending Santorum’s record and saying they did not think he was really a big-government guy, and they said they were happy that he voted against the unions more often than he voted for them. I was pretty surprised how bullish they were on Santorum’s economic record. The chick they had on was the only one criticizing him at all (not Rabinowitz), so it might be that social issues gender gap again.
Plenty of people on both sides of the aisle said Reagan couldn’t win either.
Then they looked at their choices.
I agree except this administration is anything but politically inept. Demagoguery and class warfare politics are the only things it does well. I'm hoping that somehow Newt pulls off a miracle or that a strong candidate emerges in a brokered convention.
Shame on you Dorothy Rabinowitz. you should know better.
I say bring it on. I jumped out of my chair in glee when Newt (finally someone)brought up the I word-infanticide.
IF the MSM wants to make birth control an issue then I say-I’ll see your birth control and raise you an Infanticide.
What are these unpalatable views of Santorum anyway- that marriage is between a man and a woman, that sticking surgical scissors through a baby’s head is immoral. that a child should have a mother and father who are married to each other.
If these views are truly unpalatable in America today, we are doomed and it doesn’t matter who becomes president.
Finally, despite the MSM narrative, the main issues will be, as always, economic issues-unemployment, deficits, gas prices etc
Look at the polling- Obama is rarely over 50%- all candidates, including Ron Paul are within striking distance.
I’m getting tired of the whining. There is much to be optimistic about.
LLS
I don’t, and I am listening to him closely. I want to support and like him. Yes, the media is making it much worse. But to say he doesn’t need to work on this is a bit navie at best. He does. Hello Houston. Do something about it Rick.
If Santorum puts a heavyweight like Newt on as his V.P., then he’ll have a solid chance selling himself, just as Cheney helped shore up doubts about Bush. Since Romney and Paul are teamed up, we have to remember that if we go into the convention undecided, Santorum will need to get delegates from someone. It may come down to whether Romney + Paul’s delegates outnumber Rick + Newt’s. And in that scenario we are currently behind the 8-ball, losing the popular vote 1.4 million to 1.2 million so far (119 to 79 in delegates). Rick and Newt need to start walking away with a combined over 50% vote in states. They’ve both been doing awful in “blue” states while either Paul or Romney perform respectably in purple/red states.
The game has changed and with Romney and Paul teamed up, it’s not going to be enough for Santorum just to “win states.” Both him and Newt’s delegates combined need to beat Romney and Paul’s combined. And probably by a wide margin to account for the “stealth” delegates Paul’s people are reportedly sneaking in “pledged” to Rick or Newt.
just as they all prayed to get that idiot extremist nutball cowboy Reagan in 1980...
Dorothy,
I usually love your writing and you always get to the point. But this article is a little hypocritical, wouldn’t you say? You go on to lambaste Santorum for past statements and actions he’s made, then complain about why the most gifted politician of the lot (Newt Gingrich) is not leading). Why? Because people are running adds against him about his past statements and actions.
Look, no candidate is ever perfect. Not even Reagan stands up to that microscope. They are all flawed in some form or fashion. Rick is flawed also, but overall I believe he is our best candidate going forward and that’s why I support him.
I am afraid you are right. Ron Paul has decided the best way to influence the election is to get in bed with Romney. His boy will have a place in the Adminstration, maybe even V.P. This complicates things alot. Romeny will do anything to win. This might be his ticket. We need the delegates to be greater for Rick and Newt than they are for Ron and Mitt, or we lose. It is become more and more aparent everyday.
First, I agree with what you said, 100%.
But my question is, is the economy going to be horrid?? My company is hiring constantly as it expands production.
They are a well managed company, but still.
I was there during that time. To compare this situation to 1980 is beyond silly. Rick Santorum is no Reagan. He can not commuicate like Ronnie, and he sure does not have the personal warmth Ronnie had. I am listening and watching for him to wake up and find his voice. He hasn’t yet. Until he does I will save my prayers for Newt Gingrich, who has both the experience and commication sills to win a national election.
First, of the Obama administration was putting out it’s own anti-Santorum ads in Michigan. They WANT TO RUN AGAINST ROMNEY. They are scared to death of Santorum and the TEA PARTy.
Gasoline is headed through the roof. They are predicting $8/gal, by the summer, where I live. That’s what they were talking about on our local radio show, and I believe it because the talk show host’s husband is a corporate planner at a local refinery.
Every quarter increase at the pump takes $116 billion out of the economy.
THE DNC started that when it seemed Romney might already be the defacto winner.
THE MEDIA (not the DNC) has been all over every candidate EXCEPT Romney
Washerwoman just jumped the gun with her Romney attacks- he is not the nominee yet.
